Men's Tennis Sweeps Moravian For Seventh Straight Win

BOX SCORE

MADISON, N.J. (April 1, 2017) – The Drew University men's tennis team didn't fool around in a 9-0 sweep of Moravian College on Saturday at home to begin Landmark Conference play 2-0.

With its seventh straight win, the Rangers move to 12-1 on the season with an early perfect record in league competition. The Greyhounds fall to 2-9 in their 2017 Landmark opener.

Junior Salikh Gilmutdinov dropped just two games throughout No. 1 singles and doubles matches against the Greyhounds. He put up zeroes in his singles match, 6-0, 6-0, over Moravian's Giovanni Lombardi before teaming with sophomore Will Morrison for an 8-2 win at the top doubles spot.

"Doubles was the key to the win today," said head coach Matthew Brisotti. "It was important to set the tone early, and they did that by playing great 'Drew Doubles,' which emphasizes teamwork, pacing and communication."

Gilmutdinov wins his 10th consecutive singles match, matching a similar streak by freshman Geoffrey Diehl. The rookie won at fourth singles (6-1, 6-1) for his 10th straight to improve to 13-1 overall and 11-0 in dual matches.

Sophomore Vineet Vemulapally still leads the squad in singles wins at 14-2 with his 6-0, 6-3 victory at second singles over Moravian. He also combined with Diehl for an 8-0 sweep at No. 2 doubles on Saturday.

Morrison, sophomore Kevin Shulca and freshman Bryce Weizer won in straight sets at third, fifth and sixth singles, respectively, to cap the shutout. Freshman Parker Diamond and sophomore Chris Morville finished the doubles sweep at the No. 3 spot with an 8-2 win, the duo's sixth straight victory together.

Drew has a non-conference tune-up on the docket for Wednesday, April 5 against Ramapo at home before visiting Catholic and Goucher in two crucial Landmark dual matches next weekend.
