Sheetz Sparks Softball to Split With Hunter

MADISON, N.J. (April 20, 2017) – Junior second baseman Madi Sheetz drove in half of the Drew University softball team's runs in a 6-5 win over Hunter College in Game 2 of a doubleheader, which the Rangers split at home on Thursday.

By the Numbers: Hunter took Game 1 in six innings, 11-3. The Rangers' record adjusts to 8-19 overall and 3-5 in Madison, while the Hawks move to 10-13 on the year and 4-7 on the road.

Top Performers
• Sheetz was 2-for-3 with three RBIs in the Game 2 victory. She knocked in a run with a single in the fourth inning to put Drew up 2-0 before placing a single down the right field line to plate two runs in the sixth for the 6-1 advantage. The runs loomed large considering Hunter's comeback attempt in the final inning.
• Sophomore pitcher Cara O'Leary earned the win – the first of her career – on the mound in Game 2, going the distance and allowing seven hits, three walks and three runs to go with three strikeouts. She also had a hit in each contest at the plate, including an RBI triple in Game 1.
• Senior center fielder Phylicia Pellot recorded a hit in both games and plated the Rangers' first run in Game 2 on a sac fly.
• Sophomore right fielder Katie Grodski scored a run in each game and drew a bases-loaded walk for an RBI in Game 2.

The Difference: Hunter rallied for four runs in the seventh, but a heads up play in the outfield possibly prevented the Hawks from completely erasing the deficit. With runners on first and second and one out, what looked to be another base hit turned into a 9-3 putout from Grodski for the second out. Hunter would get within one run before O'Leary coaxed a foulout to first base to end the game.

Game 1 Highlights
• Down 3-0 in the fourth, Drew got on the board with senior Emma Agostini's RBI single to left field. The ball got past the left fielder, allowing a second run to score on the error.
• O'Leary's first career triple plated Grodski, who walked to lead off the inning.
• Agostini took the loss, but only allowed seven hits in her six innings. Eight walks hurt the Drew starter, as did errors behind her. Five defensive miscues led to just two of Hunter's 11 runs being earned.

Game 2 Highlights
• Junior third baseman Lauren Mastropierro led off the third inning with a double, her fourth of the season and second in three games. O'Leary reached on a bunt single to move Mastropierro to third before Pellot brought her home on the sac fly to right field. Mastropierro finished the game 2-for-3
• The leadoff runner getting on again helped Drew in the fourth, when junior catcher Heather Ronchi singled and scored on Sheetz's RBI single.
• The Rangers' fateful four-run fifth was sparked by Pellot's one-out single, followed by a hit from junior left fielder Brooke Adams and back-to-back walks. Drew got its fourth run on a wild pitch before Sheetz broke it open with her two-run single.

Up Next: The Rangers pick up Landmark Conference play on Saturday, April 22 at 1 p.m. against The University of Scranton at home.
