TOWSON, Md. (April 22, 2017) – Freshman attacker
Seamus O'Connor scored the overtime game-winner to propel the Drew University men's lacrosse team to an 11-10 win at Goucher College on Saturday and clinch the No. 3 seed in the 2017 Landmark Conference Championship Tournament.
By the Numbers: Drew qualifies for the postseason for the first time since 2014 with a 3-2 record in the Landmark. With the win, the Rangers improve to 7-6 and drop the Gophers to 4-9 and 1-4.
Top Performers
• O'Connor's sudden victory goal was his 17
th tally of the season, and second in the game. The breakout rookie totaled three points by adding an assist to start a three-goal rally in the second quarter to tie the game.
• Freshman midfielder
Kyle MacDonnell netted three goals for his second career hat trick in as many games, giving him eight goals over that span. All three strikes came at crucial moments of the game: he scored the opening goal, he started a three-goal run in the second to tie the game, and he tallied the game-tying goal with 6:46 to play in the game to create a 9-9 deadlock. The rookie led the team in points on Saturday with five by adding a pair of assists.
• Junior attacker
Jack Crowley hit the back of the net twice to drive his team leading season total to 23. He paced the attack with seven shots, and both of his scores tied the game – at 2-2 in the first and 8-8 in the third.
The Difference: It only took one possession in overtime to walk off with the win, and that was thanks to a clutch faceoff win and subsequent groundball pickup from junior
Joe Palmieri. The possession led to one shot off target by freshman midfielder
Kevin Goettlich, but Drew retained the ball. On the next sequence, O'Connor dodged a defender and buried the game-winner.
Highlights
• Senior goalkeeper
Teddy Sweeney made seven stops in the victory, and none of them were bigger than the save that kept a Goucher shot out of the cage with the game tied 10-10 and just 11 seconds remaining. Sweeney also picked up six groundballs in the win.
• Goettlich, sophomore
Thomas Ensmenger, Palmieri and senior defender
Frank Kingston all added goals. Goettlich's tied the game at 5-5 at put a stamp on a three-goal run in the second quarter, while Ensminger scored on a man-up goal off a feed from MacDonnell to start another three-goal run that would eventually tie the game at 8-8.
• Kingston's unassisted blast tied the game at 10-10 with 3:28 to play and forced the overtime period.
Stat Sheet
• Goucher slightly outshot the Rangers, 40-37, but Drew was more accurate in the shots on goal department, 21-17.
• The Rangers committed a season-low 11 turnovers and were nearly perfect on the clear (16-of-17), with the only failed attempt coming during a last ditch effort to score at the end of regulation following Sweeney's big save.
• Drew decidedly won the groundball battle, 40-27, but conceded faceoffs 14-11 to the Gophers.
• The Rangers' penalty kill was outstanding again as Goucher went 0-for-4 with a man up. The Rangers converted one power play goal in four tries.
Up Next: With the Rangers locked into the No. 3 seed, the pressure is off during
head coach Thomas Leanos' final home game at Ranger Stadium. Drew will host Susquehanna University at 2:45 p.m. on Saturday, April 29 and fans are encouraged to arrive early as Drew honors eight members of the Class of 2017 on Senior Day.
