MADISON, N.J. (April 5, 2017) – The Drew University women's lacrosse team outscored Kean University 7-1 over the final 23 minutes to win its non-conference finale 12-8 at Ranger Stadium on Wednesday.
By the Numbers: The Rangers improve to 7-5 on the year, 5-1 at Ranger Stadium, and wrap up non-conference play with a 7-4 record. The Cougars fall to 7-3 and lose on the road for the first time this season (3-1).
Top Performers
• Senior midfielder
Morgan Mason tallied a game-high five points on four goals and an assist. She scored the first goal, the final goal and the go-ahead goal with 21:09 to play to give Drew a lead it would not relinquish. The senior stuffed the stat sheet with two groundballs, two caused turnovers and three draw controls.
• Senior goalkeeper
Gianna Minogue made 13 saves in the victory, including four in the decisive second half.
• Freshmen midfielders
Allie DiDario and
Jenna Morelli each scored twice and caused two turnovers apiece.
• Drew's defense stepped up the pressure during the second half surge led by senior
Gionna Marotta, junior
Nicole Kinney and sophomore
Shaylyn MacKinnon, who finished the day with a combined seven caused turnovers.
The Difference: Down 7-5 with 24:09 to play, Drew began its comeback. Senior attacker
Kelly Dwyer started the push with a sweet shot to the side netting off a quick feed from Kinney. The Rangers made it a 6-0 run with goals from DiDario, Mason, senior attacker
Anna Fiorini, Morelli and Kinney to take an 11-7 lead with 12:15 to go.
Highlights
• Morelli scored Drew's second goal midway through the first half after finishing a successful clear and driving all the way to the cage for an unassisted goal, the first of two for the rookie to run her season total to eight.
• Senior attacker
Theresa Shafron scored her team-leading 26
th goal of the year on a woman-up opportunity with 12:46 left in the first half. Mason assisted the goal, then scored on an unassisted blast five minutes later to tie the game at 4-4.
Stat Sheet:
• Kean slightly outshot Drew (25-22) and held a similar advantage in shots on goal (21-17), making Minogue's 13 saves loom that much larger.
• Both teams failed just three clears apiece on 44 total attempts.
• Drew edged the Cougars, 12-10, on draw controls, but conceded the groundball battle, 21-16.
• Five of Kean's goals were on the free position in nine total attempts. Drew countered with a 4-of-7 mark from the 8-meter.
