TOWSON, Md. (April 9, 2017) – The Drew University men's tennis team suffered defeat for the first time since March 8, falling in its first Landmark Conference duel 5-4 in the final match at defending champion Goucher College on Sunday.
 
The Rangers fall for just the second time this season and take a 14-2 overall record and 3-1 mark in Landmark play into its bye week. The Gophers move to 9-8 and 2-1.
 
Goucher led after doubles play 2-1, with sophomore 
Vineet Vemulapally and freshman 
Geoffrey Diehl salvaging the win for Drew at the No. 2 spot by a 9-7 score. The pair has now won 11 straight matches dating back to March 7.
 
Drew won three of the next five singles matches to tie the score at 4-4. Junior 
Salikh Gilmutdinov and Diehl each won their 13
th consecutive matches at first and fourth singles, respectively. Vemulapally came from behind for a victory at the No. 2 spot, falling 6-0 in the opening set before bouncing back 6-4, 6-3 in sets two and three.
 
With the match on the line, Goucher won at sixth singles in straight sets to clinch the competitive Landmark dual match.
 
The Rangers get a week off before closing the season with three home Landmark dual matches, beginning on Wednesday, April 19 at 4:00 p.m. against The University of Scranton.
