MADISON, N.J.- The Drew University field hockey team began its 2017 season on Friday night by hosting the 34
th Annual Drew Fall Festival at Ranger Stadium. In their opening game of the two-day event, the Rangers (0-1) suffered a 6-1 defeat against William Smith (1-0).
William Smith peppered
Ryann Callaghan (Fountain Valley, Calif.) with shots early on, but the Drew goalkeeper kept it scoreless until Maura Moran converted a penalty stroke at the 11:10 mark to give the Herons a 1-0 lead. William Smith added three more tallies in the first half and took a 4-0 advantage into the break.
Madi Sheetz (Macungie, Pa.) got the Rangers on the board early in the second half when she made a nice move past the William Smith goalkeeper and put it into the back of the net. However, the Herons responded two minutes later, then Hannah Wood notched her second goal of the game to cap the scoring in William Smith's 6-1 win.
Wood had three points for the Herons with two goals and an assist, while Fallon Adair and Alexadra Frary each registered a goal and an assist. Callaghan (0-1) made 16 saves for the Rangers.
On Saturday, Drew faces Lebanon Valley (1-0) at 6 p.m. The Dutchmen notched a 3-2 overtime victory against Cabrini in Friday's first game.
