MADISON, N.J.- On a rainy Wednesday afternoon at Ranger Stadium, the Drew University women's soccer team (2-1-0) began its home schedule with a 2-0 victory over Manhattanville (0-1-1). Two first-half goals held up, as
Brielle Castanheira (Roxbury, N.J.) recorded her first career shutout.
Drew got the scoring started off a set piece in the 19
th minute.
Katie Weber (Newton, N.J.) took a corner kick and lifted a perfectly placed ball into the box, which was put away by
Alex Gilgorri (Mount Plains, N.J.) to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead. Drew doubled its lead 11 minutes later when
Meghan McDermott (Commack, N.Y.) controlled a cross from
Leah Dentale (Northport, N.Y.) and found the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
The Rangers had a chance to add to their lead early in the second half, but
Sarah Racine's (Denville, N.J.) shot hit the crossbar. However, the Drew defense held the Valiants to a single shot over the final 45 minutes (and just two in the game) en route to its second shutout in three contests this season.
Castanheira (1-0-0) saved Manhattanville's only shot that went on goal. Gabriella Beltrami (0-1-1), meanwhile, registered two saves for the Valiants.
This weekend, the Rangers continue their three-game homestand by hosting the 34
th Annual Drew Fall Festival. Drew faces Kean (1-2-0) at 1 p.m. on Saturday, followed by a matchup between Ramapo (1-2-0) and Lycoming (1-1-0) at 3 p.m.
