Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Keegan Tallies 36, Hits Game-Winner, In 81-79 Triumph at Moravian

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Fittingly, on a night when she scored 36 points, Michaela Keegan (Mendham, N.J.) hit the biggest shot of the game.  Her jumper with two seconds left proved to be the difference in the Drew University women's basketball team's (10-4, 2-1 Landmark) 81-79 victory over Moravian (11-3, 1-2 Landmark) at Johnston Hall on Wednesday.  The Greyhounds' three-point attempt at the buzzer fell short, as the Rangers earned their fifth straight win and seventh in their last eight games.

Drew trailed by 10 points with 1:06 left in the third quarter, but got a Julia Ramos (Hazlet, N.J.) trey and a Keegan layup to cut its deficit to five, 67-62, at the end of the period.  After layups by Erin Frederick (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Ramos to start the fourth brought the Rangers within one, 67-66, the Greyhounds tallied five of the next seven points to increase their cushion to four, 72-68, at the 5:14 mark.

Moravian was still in front, 77-75, when Sarah Henig's (Point Pleasant Beach, N.J.) rebound and put back knotted the score with 1:15 left.  Keegan then sank a pair of free throws to give Drew its first lead since midway through the second quarter.

However, after Ramos missed two foul shots with 23 seconds to go, Moravian grabbed the rebound and called timeout to advance the ball.  The Greyhounds worked the ball to Karlie Brogan, and she drained a jumper to tie it at 79-79 with 17 seconds remaining.  After Drew Head Coach John Olenowski used his final timeout, the Rangers ran the clock down to two seconds, when Keegan gave her team the lead again.  Moravian took a timeout and wetnt for the win, but Camille McPherson's trey was off the mark, giving Drew its first win at Johnston Hall since joining the Landmark.

Keegan's 36-point explosion equaled the fourth-highest single-game total in program history, trailing only Leslie Rushton (42 vs. Rutgers-Newark on Feb. 3, 1982; 37 vs. Livingston on March 3, 1981) and Courtney Cunningham (39 at Delaware Valley on Feb. 7, 2007).  Melissa Kraft also tallied 36 points at Wilkes on Feb. 17, 2007.

She led three Rangers in double-figures.  Ramos finished with 12 points and four assists, while Henig recorded 10 points and seven rebounds.  Hailey Stine (Annandale, N.J.) tallied nine points and three assists, and Moe Davis Campbell (Franklin, N.J.) contributed seven points to go along with six boards and three assists.  The Rangers outrebounded the Greyhounds 33-30 and shot 55.9 percent (33-of-59) from the field.  Drew was 6-for-13 (46.2 percent) from long range and 9-for-13 (69.2 percent) at the charity stripe.

The Rangers led by as many as five points in the first quarter and held a 24-21 advantage after 10 minutes.  Drew was still in front by five, 30-25, when Moravian went on a 10-4 run to pull ahead, 35-34.  The Rangers regained the lead, 36-35, on a Keegan layup with 3:24 left before halftime, but the Greyhounds ended the half on a 9-3 spurt to take a 44-39 cushion into the locker room.

After Drew pulled within two at 59-57 on a Lisa Cappiello (Staten Island, N.Y.) three-pointer at the 3:28 mark of the third quarter, Moravian rallied for eight straight points to take its largest advantage of the game, 67-57, with 1:06 left in the period.

Four Greyhounds scored in double-figures, led by Nadie Ewald's 18 points.  McPherson finished with 17 points, nine rebounds and four assists, while Brogan tallied 13 points, five boards and four steals.  Maddie Capuano added 12 points, five assists and three steals.  Trista Cunningham, meanwhile, contributed nine points, seven rebounds and five assists.  Moravian shot 49.2 percent (30-of-61) from the floor, 50 percent (5-of-10) from downtown, and 70 percent (14-of-20) at the free throw line.

On Saturday, Drew returns home for a 4 p.m. matchup with No. 17 Juniata (14-0, 3-0 Landmark).  The contest will follow the men's game between the Rangers and Eagles at 2 p.m.
