Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Susquehanna Gets By Drew, 50-47

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – On Saturday afternoon, the Drew University women's basketball team suffered a 50-47 loss to Susquehanna at Houts Gymnasium.  The Rangers (11-6, 3-3 Landmark) had the ball and a chance to tie with seven seconds left, but a three-point attempt by Julia Ramos (Hazlet, N.J.) was off the mark, and the River Hawks (7-9, 2-4 Landmark) held on for the victory.

Drew led 38-33 after three quarters, and still held a 47-46 advantage with 2:20 remaining.  However, Susquehanna went in front, 48-47, on a pair of Erin McQuillen free throws with 1:04 left, then extended the margin to 50-47 on Bailey Trell's foul shots at the 20-second mark.  The Rangers called timeout and moved the ball into the frontcourt, but Hailey Stine's (Annandale, N.J.) three didn't fall and Susquehanna grabbed the rebound.

With the Rangers forced to foul in order to stop the clock, Trell missed a pair of free throws with seven seconds left and Erin Frederick (Staten Island, N.Y.) secured the rebound.  Head Coach John Olenowski took another timeout and drew up a final play.  Ramos threw up a three at the buzzer, but it didn't go, and Drew suffered its second straight defeat, 50-47.

Ramos registered six rebounds and five assists to go along with her team-high 12 points.  Michaela Keegan (Mendham, N.J.) finished with 11 points and eight boards, and Moe Davis Campbell (Franklin, N.J.) contributed nine points.  Frederick had seven points and five rebounds, while Aly Axman (Baltimore, Md.) grabbed seven rebounds.  The Rangers shot 32.1 percent (17-of-53) from the field and outrebounded the River Hawks 43-38.  Drew went 4-for-20 (20 percent) from three-point land and 9-for-10 (90 percent) at the charity stripe.

The Rangers scored the first four points of the game and held a 13-11 lead after one quarter.  Drew opened the second quarter on a 12-2 run to build its largest cushion of the game, a 25-13 advantage, with 4:59 remaining before halftime.  After Susquehanna pulled within six, 27-21, Ramos sank a layup to put Drew in front 29-21 at intermission.

Susquehanna cut it to four, 33-29, at the 3:15 mark of the third quarter, but Ramos immediately responded with a trey to put the Rangers back up seven, 36-29.  A Keegan jumper made it 38-31 with 1:23 remaining in the period before a pair of Maddie Murray free throws cut the River Hawks' deficit to five, 38-33, entering the fourth quarter.

For the River Hawks, Trell led the way with 17 points and eight rebounds.  She added three steals.  Courtney Adams tallied 10 points, seven boards and three blocks, while McQuillen also pulled down seven rebounds.  Susquehanna was held to 28.3 percent (17-of-60) shooting, including 25 percent (4-of-16) from long range.  The River Hawks went 12-for-16 (75 percent) at the free throw line.

After playing nine out of 11 away from Baldwin Gymnasium, the Rangers will begin a three-game homestand against No. 17 Scranton (16-1, 4-1 Landmark) at 7 p.m. on Wednesday night.
