Late Three-Pointer Lifts Elizabethtown Past Drew

MADISON, N.J. – A three-pointer by Elizabethtown's Mikayla Ruth with 39 seconds remaining proved to be the difference on Wednesday night, as the Blue Jays (12-7, 6-3 Landmark) notched a 73-68 victory over the Drew University women's basketball team (12-8, 4-5 Landmark) at Baldwin Gymnasium.  After the Rangers missed a jumper on the other end, Elizabethtown closed out its come-from-behind win at the free throw line.

Drew held a 39-31 halftime edge, but Marissa Emlet's trey late in the third quarter gave the Blue Jays a 55-52 advantage entering the final period.  Elizabethtown extended that margin to seven points, 66-59, with 6:30 remaining, but the Rangers responded with an 8-0 run to go back in front.  After a Moe Davis Campbell (Franklin, N.J.) made it 67-66 Drew, the Blue Jays regained the lead, 68-67, on an Emlet layup at the 1:55 mark.

Davis Campbell was fouled on the other end and missed the first free throw before hitting the second to tie the game, 68-68.  After Ruth's trey with 39 seconds to go put Elizabethtown back in front, Julia Ramos (Hazlet, N.J.) missed a jumper and Elizabethtown grabbed the rebound.  The Blue Jays went 1-for-2 at the line to make it a four-point game, then capped the victory with a steal on the ensuing Drew possession.

Four players accounted for 64 of Drew's 68 points.  Hailey Stine (Annandale, N.J.) led the way with 17 points, while Michaela Keegan (Mendham, N.J.) and Davis Campbell finished with an identical line of 16 points and seven rebounds.  Keegan also had three assists and two blocks, and Davis Campbell added three steals.  Ramos, meanwhile, recorded 15 points and six assists.  Erin Frederick (Staten Island, N.Y.) tallied seven boards, and Haley Scheuer (Lincroft, N.J.) posted three blocks.  As a team, Drew shot 42.4 percent (25-of-59) from the floor, 37.5 percent (6-of-16) from downtown, and 60 percent (12-of-20) at the charity stripe.

The Rangers came storming out of the gate, leading by as many as 13 points in the first quarter.  Drew shot 61.1 percent (11-of-18) from the floor in the opening frame and held a 27-17 advantage after 10 minutes.  After a Ramos layup gave the Rangers their largest lead of the night, a 33-19 cushion with 7:17 left before halftime, the Blue Jays rallied for six straight points to trim the margin to eight, 33-25.  Drew held that same eight-point lead, 39-31, at the break.

Elizabethtown started the third quarter on a 16-9 spurt, though, trimming its deficit to one at 48-47 with 3:40 remaining in the period.  Drew pushed the margin back to five points, 52-47, on pair of Davis Campbell free throws and a Keegan jumper, but the Blue Jays ended the quarter on an 8-0 spurt to go ahead, 55-52.

Ruth paced the Blue Jays with a game-high 26 points, and she also pulled down six rebounds.  Emlet finished with 14 points, six boards and five steals, while Veronica Christ contributed nine points and 10 rebounds.  Lydia Lawson added nine points of her own to go along with five assists.  The Blue Jays outrebounded the Rangers 40-39 and shot 39.1 percent from both the field (25-of-64) and three-point range (9-of-23).  Elizabethtown was 14-for-19 (73.7 percent) at the foul line.

On Saturday afternoon, the Rangers begin a two-game road trip with a 4 p.m. matchup at Catholic (14-6, 5-4 Landmark).  The Cardinals lead Drew by one game for the final spot in the Landmark Conference Tournament and currently own the tiebreaker by virtue of their 68-49 win when the teams met in Madison on Dec. 2.
