Rangers Upended at Catholic

WASHINGTON – After playing three straight at home, the Drew University women's basketball team began a two-game road trip at Catholic on Saturday afternoon.  Unfortunately, though, the Rangers (12-9, 4-6 Landmark) were unable to come away with a victory, as the Cardinals (15-6, 6-4 Landmark) earned a 66-46 triumph at the DuFour Athletic Center.

Catholic led 14-7 after one period, but the Rangers started the second quarter on an 8-0 run, pulling in front 15-14, on a Michaela Keegan (Mendham, N.J.) three-pointer with 7:50 remaining in the first half.  After the teams traded baskets, the Cardinals went on a 10-2 spurt to take a 26-19 advantage with 2:18 left before halftime.  Catholic extended its cushion to nine points before a Julia Ramos (Hazlet, N.J.) trey brought Drew within six, 31-25, at the break.

The Cardinals outscored the Rangers 22-6 in the third quarter, though, to increase their lead to 53-31.  After Catholic pushed the margin to a game-high 25 points at 58-33 midway through the fourth quarter, Drew scored eight of the next 10 points to pull within 60-41 with 2:31 remaining.  Haley Scheuer (Lincroft, N.J.) hit a late three-pointer to cut the Rangers' deficit to 64-46 before the Cardinals closed out the scoring to make the final margin 20 points, 66-46.

Ramos recorded a team-high 12 points to go along with five rebounds.  Keegan added 11 points, five boards and three steals, while Hailey Stine (Annandale, N.J.) finished with 10 points and three steals.  Erin Frederick (Staten Island, N.Y.) pulled down six rebounds and handed out three assists for the Rangers, who shot 34.6 percent (18-of-52) from the field.  Drew was 7-for-22 (31.8 percent) from downtown and 3-for-6 (50 percent) at the line.

For the Cardinals, Briana Bull had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds.  She also registered seven steals.  Sydney Poindexter finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and four steals, while Mollie Reynolds contributed eight points, five boards and three steals.  Megan Stafford grabbed eight rebounds, as Catholic held a 49-31 edge on the glass.  The Cardinals shot 37.3 percent (25-of-67) from the floor, 26.7 percent (4-of-15) from long range, and 70.6 percent (12-of-17) at the charity stripe.

On Wednesday, the Rangers return to action with a 7 p.m. matchup at No. 14 Scranton (20-1, 9-1 Landmark).  The Royals earned a 64-51 win when the teams met in Madison on Jan. 24.
