MADISON, N.J. - Senior
Kate Todero scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner 3:30 into overtime, and the Drew University field hockey team erased a 2-0 deficit to beat Ramapo College 3-2 in non-conference action Wednesday evening at a frigid Ranger Stadium.
How it Happened: With the two sides playing overtime rules of 7-on-7, the Rangers found themselves in a 2-on-1 breakaway with the goalie. Freshman
Mallory Holson drove at the Ramapo goalie, who came out to meet her at the top of the circle. Holson flipped a pass to the left just before getting tripped by the keeper, setting up Todero for a wide-open look into the cage. It was her second game-winning goal of the season and her first career multi-goal game.
Rally Time: Ramapo scored twice in the opening half, striking less than six minutes into the game, then again on a penalty stroke with 13:13 left in the opening half. But the Rangers found new life in the second period, starting with a tally from junior
Sami Strathern on a tip from the left post less than two minutes into the stanza. Then with 10:01 showing, Todero provided the equalizer, lifting a shot from the left into the right side of the cage following a scramble in front. The Roadrunners (5-12) threatened in the closing moments of regulation, when they earned four penalty corners in the final three minutes, including two with no time on the clock. But the Ranger defense stood tall and blocked both shots taken during the stretch. Todero's goal came on the first shot for either team in the extra session.
Stat Sheet: Ramapo finished with a 16-6 shot advantage and placed 11 shots on frame. However, senior
Ryann Callaghan registered nine saves for the Rangers. The Roadrunners accumulated a 21-3 surplus in penalty corners.
Next Up: Drew (2-14) returns to Ranger Stadium on Friday at 7:30 p.m., when they complete a contest with Sage from Oct. 2 that was tied 2-2 in the second overtime before being called due to lightning. The Rangers close out the season on Saturday, when they visit Susquehanna University at noon in a Landmark Conference affair.
