NEW YORK - Sophomore forward
Erin Frederick posted 16 points and nine rebounds to lead a balanced effort as the Drew University women's basketball team topped Baruch College 74-43 in the season opener for both teams Saturday afternoon.
Turning Point: After trailing 15-13 at the end of the first quarter, the Rangers got hot, outscoring the Bearcats by 33 the rest of the way. Drew held Baruch to five points in the second quarter while opening up a 28-20 halftime advantage. The Blue and Green then poured in 46 points in the second half, outscoring the hosts 20-9 in the third quarter and 26-14 in the final stanza. Midway through the third quarter, the Rangers put together a 10-2 run to open up a 17-point advantage and gradually pulled away.
Top Performers: Frederick shot 7-for-14 from the field in her big season-opening performance while freshman forwards
Sekya Campbell (11 points, six rebounds) and
Lauren Cruse (10 points, seven rebounds) provided a big lift off the bench in their collegiate debuts. Eleven of the 12 Rangers who entered the game figured into the scoring column.
Stat Sheet: Drew earned a decided advantage on the glass, out-rebounding Baruch 51-30 while racking up 30 second-chance points and 20 points in the paint. The Rangers also forced 23 turnovers that translated into 26 points. Led by Campbell and Cruse, Drew's bench outscored Baruch's subs 42-2.
