ASHLAND, Va. – The Drew University men's basketball team shot a red-hot 63.6 percent from 3-point range and advanced to the championship game of the Randolph-Macon Coaches Tournament with a 93-60 first-round victory over Stockton University Friday evening. The Rangers (8-2) shot 21-for-33 from beyond the arc, including a dazzling stretch in which they made eight consecutive 3-pointers. Four players scored in double figures for Drew, which posted its highest scoring output of the season.
Turning Point: The Rangers led by just six midway through the opening half before embarking on a 17-4 run to open up a 35-16 lead with 6:32 left in the period. Senior forward
Sky Harris scored the final 12 points of the stretch when he buried four-straight 3-pointers. He added another for good measure with 3:55 on the clock to finish the half 5-for-5 from behind the line and the Rangers took a 44-26 lead into the locker room after shooting 11-for-18 from deep. Drew continued its shooting clinic in the second half, highlighted by its aforementioned stretch midway through the stanza in which it went 8-for-8 from 3-point land. Four different Rangers connected over the run, including junior guard
Cole Hanntz, who drained all of his career-high four 3-pointers during the outburst.
Top Performers: Harris tied his season-high with 18 points while shooting 6-for-7 from 3-point range, doubling his career-high for 3's in a game. Senior guard
Darius Reiter also scored 18 points while shooting 4-for-6 from 3-point territory, and Hanntz netted a career-high 15 points on 4-of-7 shooting from deep. Junior guard
Riley Collins contributed his first career double-double with 14 points and a career-high 10 assists while senior forward
Nate Aldrich chipped in with eight points and nine rebounds.
Stat Sheet: The Rangers were credited with an assist on 26 of their 32 field goals and shot a season-high 58.6 percent from the floor. Drew held a 34-33 rebounding edge, and the two sides combined for 39 turnovers, including 21 by the Ospreys (6-5).
Notes: The Rangers came within one 3-pointer of the school record for triples in a game, set in a 120-73 victory over Penn State Abington in the championship game of the 2014 Rose City Classic…Drew's 26 assists tied for fifth-most in school history and were the most since the aforementioned win over Abington that included 27 helpers…Drew is off to the best 10-game start in program history since the 1979-80 squad also opened 8-2…Aldrich went over the 700-rebound mark for his career and now has 702 boards – fourth in program history.
Next Up: Drew will face No. 15 Randolph-Macon in the championship game on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Yellow Jackets defeated Carroll (Wis.) University 78-64 in the other first-round game.
