Hot-Shooting Susquehanna Defeats Drew

MADISON, N.J. – Susquehanna's Seth Callahan had 36 points and drained a Landmark Conference-record 12 three-pointers, as the River Hawks (9-13, 6-6 Landmark) posted a 90-72 victory over the Drew University men's basketball team (16-7, 9-3 Landmark) at Baldwin Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.  With the loss, the Rangers dropped into a tie for first place with Moravian—the team they face on Wednesday night.

Prior to the contest, Drew's final home game of the regular season, the Rangers honored their four-member senior class.  Senior Kieran Sullivan (Willingboro, N.J.) was given the start, and he got the fans fired up with an early jumper.  The River Hawks quickly quieted the crowd, though, making seven of their first 10 shots to build a 16-5 advantage less than five minutes into the tilt.

After Susquehanna increased its lead to 14 points at 26-12 with 11:36 left in the first half, back-to-back treys by Riley Collins (Lacey, N.J.) and Darius Reiter (Littleton, Colo.) sparked a 13-3 Drew run that brought the Rangers within four, 29-25, at the 7:32 mark.  However, Callahan responded with a pair of threes to push the margin back to 10 points, 35-25.  He drained his seventh trey of the half just before the halftime buzzer, as the River Hawks took a 55-33 advantage into the locker room.  Susquehanna shot a blistering 80 percent (8-of-10) from three-point range in the opening 20 minutes.

The Rangers pulled within 57-40 on a Yonathan Napoleon (Los Angeles, Calif.) trey before the River Hawks went on a 17-7 run to open up their largest lead of the game, 74-47, with 10:15 left in the contest.  The final margin was 18 points, as Susquehanna handed Drew its second straight defeat, 90-72.  With the win, the River Hawks became the first team other than Scranton to knock off the Rangers since Rutgers-Newark on Dec. 16.

Nate Aldrich (Franklinville, N.J.) had his 10th double-double of the season, notching 13 points and 14 rebounds while also recording two blocks.  Collins finished with 13 points and four assists, and Napoleon contributed 10 points.  Dan Roibal (Middletown, N.J.) tallied eight points, while Reiter posted seven points to go along with six boards.  Brendan Aldrich (Franklinville, N.J.), meanwhile, registered a career-best five points in four minutes off the bench.  The Rangers shot 48.4 percent (13-of-29) from the floor, 29.4 percent (5-of-17) from downtown, and 50 percent (7-of-14) at the charity stripe.

Callahan led four River Hawks in double figures.  Bryce Butler and Ryan Traub tallied 14 points apiece, while Zach Knecht contributed 19 points.  Tyler Hoagland, meanwhile, distributed 13 assists.  Susquehanna outrebounded Drew 35-33 and shot 53.8 percent from the field (35-of-65).  The River Hawks went a scorching 14-for-19 (73.7 percent) from long range, with Callahan finishing 12-for-15 from distance.  Susquehanna was 6-for-8 (75 percent) at the free throw line.

Drew, which has lost consecutive games for the first time this season, heads to Moravian (17-6, 9-3 Landmark) for a first place showdown at 7 p.m. on Wednesday night.  The winner will take over sole possession of the top spot heading into the final game of the regular season.  The Rangers, who won the first matchup with the Greyhounds, 87-80 on Jan. 10, will clinch a spot in the Landmark Conference Tournament with a victory in either of their final two contests.
