Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Late Drew Rally Falls Short In 59-55 Loss to Susquehanna

MADISON, N.J. – After trailing by as many as 16 points in the third quarter, the Drew University women's basketball trimmed its deficit to one with just over two minutes remaining on Saturday afternoon.  However, the Rangers (12-11, 4-8 Landmark) were unable to complete the comeback, as Susquehanna (11-11, 6-6 Landmark) held on for a 59-55 victory at Baldwin Gymnasium.

The River Hawks led 47-31 with 7:10 left in the third before Julia Ramos (Hazlet, N.J.) began the Rangers' comeback with a jumper at the 6:42 mark.  That bucket started a 14-2 run, and Drew pulled within four, 49-45, on Hailey Stine's (Annandale, N.J.) trey with 41 seconds remaining in the quarter.  Susquehanna got a layup from Bailey Trell on the other end to take a six-point cushion, 51-45, into the final period.

A Courtney Adams layup with 8:45 remaining put Susquehanna up seven, 53-46, before Michaela Keegan (Mendham, N.J.) sank three treys to account for all nine points in a 9-3 Drew run that brought the Rangers within one, 56-55, with 2:13 left.  It would remain that way until the final minute, when Drew was forced to foul and send Susquehanna to the line.  After the River Hawks went 1-for-2 on back-to-back trips, Drew Head Coach John Olenowski used his final timeout with 13.7 seconds to go.  Needing a three, Olenowski drew up a play for Ramos, but her attempt was off the mark and went out of bounds to Susquehanna with just over a second to play.  The River Hawks then iced the 59-55 victory at the charity stripe.

Keegan, who was honored along with Haley Scheuer (Lincroft, N.J.) prior to the game as a part of Drew's Senior Day ceremonies, finished with a game-high 18 points, including 16 in the second half.  She also pulled down eight rebounds.  Stine tallied 14 points and three assists, while Ramos had 10 points, three assists and three steals.  Erin Frederick (Staten Island, N.Y.), meanwhile, grabbed eight rebounds for the Rangers, who shot 32.2 percent (19-of-59) as a team.  Drew went 10-for-23 (43.5 percent) from long range and 7-for-8 (87.5 percent) at the charity stripe.

Susquehanna jumped out to an early 15-7 advantage midway through the first quarter, but a pair of Stine treys and a Moe Davis Campbell (Franklin, N.J.) layup tied it at 15-15 with 3:30 left in the period.  The River Hawks scored eight of the next 11 points to go up 23-18 before Stine hit a layup to bring Drew within three, 23-20, after one quarter.

Drew started the second quarter with a layup before Susquehanna drained back-to-back treys to push the margin back to seven points, 29-22.  The Rangers rallied back, though, as Ramos hit a three-pointer and Davis Campbell sank a pair of layups to tie the score at 29-29 with 5:00 left before halftime.  Susquehanna ended the half on a 12-0 run, though, to take a 41-29 cushion into the locker room, and the River Hawks scored the first two baskets of the third quarter to build a 16-point advantage, 45-21.

Adams led Susquehanna with 14 points, and she also recorded five of her team's 11 blocks.  Erin McQuillen posted 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists, while Bailey Trell contributed 12 points.  Tess Nichols finished with 10 points for the River Hawks.  Megan McFadden and Maddie Murray each secured eight rebounds, as Susquehanna held a 41-31 edge on the boards.  The River Hawks shot 41.8 percent (23-of-55) from the floor, 52.9 percent (9-of-17) from distance, and 50 percent (4-of-8) at the free throw line.

On Wednesday night, Drew concludes its home schedule by welcoming Moravian (16-7, 6-6 Landmark) to Baldwin Gymnasium at 7 p.m.  It will be the Rangers' breast cancer awareness game, and all fans are encouraged to wear pink.
