Drew Falls at Kean In Season Opener

UNION, N.J. – The Drew University baseball team opened its 2018 campaign on Friday afternoon with a matchup at Kean.  The Rangers (0-1) got on the board first, but were unable to hold on, as the Cougars (1-0) notched a 2-1 victory at Jim Hynes Stadium.

After Anthony Tagliaferro (Monroe Township, N.J.) drew a leadoff walk in the top of the second, Eric DiPietro (Devon, Pa.) ripped a double down the left field line that gave Drew a 1-0 lead.  However, Kean tied it on Brian Cole's RBI double in the bottom half of the inning.

It remained 1-1 until the sixth, when the Cougars went ahead on Nick Polizzano's single that knocked in Jim Fitzgerald.  Kean starter Tyler Hopman, meanwhile, didn't let a Drew base runner get past second after DiPietro's double.  He tossed eight innings of four-hit, one-run ball before giving way to Daniel Chiusano, who worked a perfect ninth for the save.  Hopman (1-0) struck out six and walked one, and Chiusano was credited with one strikeout.

Cole, Polizzano and Fitzgerald accounted for all six Kean hits.  Cole had a pair of doubles, while Polizzano ripped a double to go along with his RBI single.  Fitzgerald and Matt Krupa scored the Cougars' runs.

For the Rangers, Matthew Lange (Glen Rock, N.J.) and DiPietro each smacked a two-base hit.  Zach Lipshitz (Scotch Plains, N.J.) and Jayson Mitch (Easton, Pa.) both singled to account for Drew's only other hits in the contest.  Starting pitcher Pete Violante (Easton, Pa.) went five innings, allowing just one run on two hits with three strikeouts and a walk.  Davis Fouts (Coral Springs, Fla.) (0-1) took the loss after yielding one run on three hits in 1.1 innings.  He also picked up a strikeout.  Jeff Serin (Hillsborough, N.J.), meanwhile, struck out four and walked one over 1.2 innings of one-hit, shutout relief.

Drew returns to Jim Hynes Stadium for a neutral site matchup with Brockport (0-0) at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
