Rangers Earn Snow-Shortened Win Over Brockport

UNION, N.J. – On Saturday afternoon, the Drew University baseball team (1-1) notched its first victory of the 2018 campaign with a 4-1 triumph over Brockport (0-1) at Kean University's Jim Hynes Stadium.  The contest was halted in the bottom of the seventh inning due to snow.

Drew got the scoring started with single runs in the first and second innings.  Jayson Mitch (Easton, Pa.) was right in the middle of both rallies.  In the first, he drew a one-out walk, moved to second on a groundout and took third on Joseph Grossane's (Merrick, N.Y.) single before coming around on a passed ball.  After the Rangers loaded the bases with two out in the bottom of the second, Mitch knocked a single through the right side to make it 2-0.

Brockport picked up a run in the top of the third to cut its deficit in half, but Drew pushed the margin to 4-1 with a two-spot in the bottom of the sixth.  Ryan Sabbag (Miami, Fla.) ripped a one-out RBI single, then scored on Zach Lipshitz's (Scotch Plains, N.J.) base hit to right.  With one out in the bottom of the seventh inning and conditions deteriorating, the umpires called the game, giving the Rangers their first win of the season.

Mitch finished 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, while Sabbag was 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI.  The Rangers tallied five hits overall, with Anthony Tagliaferro's (Monroe Township, N.J.) double the only one accounting for extra bases.  Paul Roth (Bethlehem, Pa.) (1-0) pitched six solid innings to earn the win.  He surrendered one run on five hits, struck out five and won two.  Joshua Williams (Harrison, N.J.) recorded a pair of strikeouts in a 1-2-3 seventh.

Five different Golden Eagles had hits in the contest, including Lou Miceli's double.  Anthony Eaton was 1-for-3 and scored Brockport's only run.  Starting pitcher Sam McCumiskey (0-1) took the loss after yielding two runs (one earned) on three hits with five walks and two strikeouts over four innings.  Jason Hellwig tossed the final 2.1 innings, allowing two runs and two hits while striking out four.

The Rangers are back in action on Wednesday, when they visit Stevens (0-1) at 3:30 p.m.
