Drew Rallies For Extra-Inning Win at Stevens

HOBOKEN, N.J. – Trailing by two heading to the ninth, the Drew University baseball team scored three to go ahead before Stevens tied it in the bottom half of the inning on Wednesday afternoon.  The Rangers (2-1) then erupted for five runs in the top of the 10th to notch an 11-6 victory over the Ducks (0-2) at Dobelaar Field.

After having their game against Brockport on Saturday called due to snow in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Rangers played in picture-perfect conditions on Wednesday.  On a 70-degree day that was more reminiscent of mid-April than mid-February, Stevens jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third before adding another run in the fourth.

The Rangers cut their deficit to 3-2 on Matthew Lange's (Glen Rock, N.J.) two-run homer to right in the top of the sixth, then tied it when Isaiah Mateo (Hoboken, N.J.) scored on a passed ball an inning later.  However, the Ducks regained the lead on Matthew Pasko's RBI single in the bottom half of the inning, and Stevens made it 5-3 on an RBI single by Patrick Rood in the eighth.

Ryan Sabbag (Miami, Fla.) homered with one out in the ninth to bring the Rangers within one at 5-4.  Max Felsenstein (Glen Rock, N.J.) followed with an infield single before Zach Lipshitz (Scotch Plains, N.J.) and Lange both walked to load the bases.  With two down, Joseph Grossane (Merrick, N.Y.) roped a base hit up the middle that gave Drew a 6-5 lead.  Stevens responded in the bottom of the ninth, though, with an RBI single by Pasko sending the contest into extra innings.

In the top of the 10th, Drew's offense came alive.  Eric DiPietro (Devon, Pa.) drew a leadoff walk before coming all the way around from first when Mateo reached on a throwing error.  Sabbag followed with an RBI single, then Felsenstein singled and Lipshitz walked to load the bases with nobody out.  That brought up Brandon Radd (Edison, N.J.), who delivered a bases-clearing double down the right field line.

Staked to a five-run lead, Joe Dahut (Kensington, Md.) (1-0) worked around a two-out single in the bottom of the 10th to close out the victory.  He faced six Stevens hitters, giving up just the one hit and striking out three in 1.2 innings.  Starting pitcher Pete Violante (Easton, Pa.) lasted 2.2 innings, yielding two runs on five hits with four strikeouts.  The Rangers used five relievers in the game, with Vinny Doren (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) pitching three innings and recording four strikeouts.

Offensively, Drew pounded out 11 hits, with Felsenstein going 3-for-5 with two runs scored.  Sabbag finished 2-for-4 with a homer, two runs scored, and two RBIs, while Grossane was 2-for-5 with two RBIs.  Mateo scored twice, and Lipshitz came around all three times he reached base.

Five different Ducks had multi-hit games, as Stevens collected 15 hits as a team.  Pasko went 3-for-5 with two RBIs, while Rood was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two driven in.  Danny Poidomani got the start on the mound and lasted 5.2 innings.  He surrendered two runs on four hits, struck out six and walked one.  Chandler Brierley (0-1), one of six relievers used by Stevens, took the loss after yielding four runs (three earned) on two hits with a walk and a strikeout in 0.1 innings.

Up next for Drew is the home opener, a 1 p.m. matchup against Lehman (0-0) at Doc Young Field on Saturday.
