Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Rangers Win Season Opener, 13-6 Over DeSales

MADISON, N.J. – On an unseasonably beautiful 70-degree day, the Drew University women's lacrosse team opened its 2018 campaign by hosting DeSales on Wednesday afternoon.  And the Rangers (1-0) got off to about as good as start as they would've hoped, scoring the first six goals of an eventual 13-6 victory over the Bulldogs (0-1) at Ranger Stadium.

Lauren Cassella (Edison, N.J.) converted a free-position attempt just 97 seconds into the game, and she added another tally five minutes later.  It was 6-0 Drew when Julia Astram finally put the Bulldogs on the board with 5:38 remaining in the first half.  Charly Nolting (Craik, Sask.) then found the back of the net off a feed from Allie DiDario (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) to give the Rangers a 7-1 advantage at halftime.

After DeSales scored two of the first three goals in the second half, Drew tallied five of the next six to increase its cushion to 13-4 with 4:45 left.  The Bulldogs recorded two late goals to close out the scoring in the Rangers' 13-6 victory, as Drew began the season with a win for the first time since 2015.

Cassella finished with six goals, while Mia Campanale (Branchburg, N.J.) tallied five points with four goals and an assist.  Nolting had two goals and an assist, and Nicole Kinney (West Caldwell, N.J.) contributed two assists.  In addition to notching a goal and an assist, DiDario posted game-highs with seven draw controls, seven ground balls and seven caused turnovers.  Goalkeeper Katiana Michalski (Eastchester, N.Y.) (1-0) was credited with her first collegiate win after making five saves.

For the Bulldogs, Julia Astram had a hat trick, and Katie Kingsland added two goaals.  Sami Stahl controlled four draws, while Katie Stordy picked up six ground balls.  Overall, DeSales held a 26-23 edge in ground balls.  Kyra Myers (0-1) played the first half in goal for the Bulldogs and took the loss.  She allowed seven goals and made three saves.  Rachel Sheubrooks tallied four saves and surrendered six goals after relieving Myers at the break.

Drew will play each of its next four contests on the road, starting with a 12 p.m. matchup at Vassar (0-0) on Saturday.  That game will be the first half of a Drew-Vassar lacrosse doubleheader, as the Ranger and Brewer men's team are set to face off at 3 p.m.
