Drew Suffers First Loss of Season at Vassar

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Drew University women's lacrosse team hit the road for the first time this season on Saturday afternoon.  Playing through a steady rain that grew heavy at times, the Rangers (1-1) dropped a 14-8 decision to host Vassar (1-0) at Weinberg Field.

Lauren Cassella (Edison, N.J.) got the scoring started barely 90 seconds into the game, but Vassar tallied six of the next seven goals to open up a 6-2 lead midway through the first half.  After Drew cut it to 6-4 on goals by Charly Nolting (Craik, Sask.) and Cassella, the Brewers added a pair to extend their advantage to 8-6 at the break.

After Vassar increased its lead to 12-5 with 10:42 remaining, Allie DiDario (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) found the back of the net to begin the Rangers' comeback effort.  Goals by Cassella and Barbara Moukoulis (Bethlehem, Pa.) brought Drew within 13-8 before Vassar scored in the final minute to account for the final 14-8 margin.

Cassella, who had six goals in the season-opening win over DeSales on Wednesday, recorded her second straight hat trick.  Sage Johnson (Timonium, Md.) also tallied three points with a goal and two assists.  She also collected four ground balls.  DiDario, meanwhile, posted team-highs with five ground balls, five caused turnovers and six draw controls.  Katiana Michalski (Eastchester, N.Y.) (1-1) made 12 saves in goal and took the loss.  Charlotte Grimm (Bernardsville, N.J.) allowed one goal and saved one shot in relief of Michalski.

For Vassar, Tessa Waters tallied four goals and Fiona MacLeod found the back of the net three times.  She added five ground balls and three caused turnovers.  Storm Sideleau finished with four points (two goals, two assists), while Kellie Pushie and Adele MacEwen each had two goals and an assist.  Tillie Newcombe picked up seven ground balls and caused four turnovers, and Sydney Nemphos recorded six ground balls to go along with five caused turnovers.  Goalkeeper Emily Chancey (1-0) was credited with nine saves in the win.

On Wednesday, the Rangers will make the short trip across town for a 4 p.m. matchup at FDU-Florham (0-0).
