FDU-Florham Tops Drew In “Battle of Madison”

MADISON, N.J. – On Wednesday afternoon, the Drew University women's lacrosse team took on local rival FDU-Florham in the annual "Battle of Madison."  Despite three goals from Lauren Cassella (Edison, N.J.), the Rangers (1-2) dropped a 17-4 decision to the Devils (1-0) at Robert Shields Field.

After the teams traded early scores, FDU-Florham rattled off five straight goals to go up 6-1.  However, Jenna Morelli (Monroe Township, N.J.) and Cassella each found the back of the net just over three minutes apart to pull the Rangers within 6-3.  FDU-Florham scored twice late in the half to extend its cushion to 8-3 at the break, then increased the margin to 17-3 before Cassella completed her hat trick with 6:00 remaining, making the final score 17-4.

Cassella also had three ground balls and an assist to go along with her three goals.  Morrelli picked up a team-best six ground balls and caused four turnovers, while Sage Johnson (Timonium, Md.) secured four draw controls and added three ground balls.  Katiana Michalski (Eastchester, N.Y.) (1-2) played the first 43.21 in goal and made 11 saves.  Charlotte Grimm (Bernardsville, N.J.) was credited with two saves in 16:39 of relief between the pipes.

Noelle Shirley tallied six points (five goals, one assist), six ground balls and five draw controls for FDU-Florham.  Cassidy Vastano added four goals, while Caitlyn Damon also had a hat trick.  Kathleen Petrucelli also recorded six points (two goals, four assists), and Caroline Pape controlled eight draws.  Goalkeeper Megan Nemeth (1-0) saved five Drew shots in 43:14 before giving way to Erin Gill.
