Drew Starts Spring Season With Sweep of FDU-Florham

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men's and women's tennis teams began the spring season by hosting local rival FDU-Florham at Simon Forum on Saturday. And both squads came away with a victory. The Ranger men (2-0) defeated the Devils (4-1) by an 8-1 count, while Drew (2-0) earned a tight 5-4 victory over FDU-Florham (2-1) in the women's match.

Drew swept the doubles matches in men's play. Vineet Vemulapally (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Geoffrey Diehl (West Hartford, Conn.) notched an 8-2 win over Max Moscowitz and Kevin Weller in the No. 1 position, while the Rangers' No. 2 tandem of Bryce Weizer (Orwigsburg, Pa.) and Karel Raska (Morristown, N.J.) defeated Chris Fiorenz and Chris Ly 8-2. Drew completed the sweep with Bryce Kennedy (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) and Lloyd Goldstein's (New Providence, N.J.) 8-7 victory over Steven Serras and Tyler Schacher in the No. 3 doubles match.

In singles play, Vemulapally posted an 8-3 win over Moscowitz at No. 1, and Diehl clinched the overall victory by defeating Weller, 8-3, at No. 2 singles. Will Morrison (San Diego, Calif.) notched an 8-2 triumph over Ly in the No. 3 position, while No. 4 Kennedy earned a hard-fought 8-6 triumph over Schacher. At No. 5 singles, Raska beat Serras 8-1. FDU-Florham's only victory on the men's side came at No. 6 singles, where Fiorenz topped Goldstein by an 8-4 count.

It was a much tighter affair on the women's side, where Drew took an early 2-1 in doubles. The Rangers' No. 1 duo of Ashley Camel (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and Maria Navas Espinal (Valle, Colombia) posted an 8-6 triumph over Nicole Del Rosso and Christine Kenny, while Ty Ty Witten (New Haven, Conn.) and Kathryn Swenor (Basking Ridge, N.J.) recorded an 8-2 win over Amelia Vetto and Mia Capozzoli in the No. 3 position. FDU-Florham earned a win at No. 2 doubles, as Kira Bradley and Serina Grande defeated Cristina Riccio (New Providence, N.J.) and Christina Christodoulou (Branchburg, N.J.) by an 8-6 count.

FDU-Florham pulled even with Del Rosso's 8-6 victory over Navas Espinal at No. 1 singles, but Drew regained the overall lead with wins in the No. 2 and 3 positions. No. 2 Camel defeated Kenny 8-4, while Witten beat Bradley in a tiebreak, 8-7 (8-6), at No. 3 singles. However, the Devils won the No. 4 and 5 matches, with Grande beating Riccio 8-2 at No. 3 and Cappozzoli toppoing Christodoulu 8-4 at No. 5. However, in the decisive No. 6 singles match, Swenor earned an 8-5 triumph over Brooke Dorsey, clinching the match for the Rangers and giving Head Coach Scott Veith a pair of wins (over his former team) in his Rangers debut.

Both squads are off until March 4, when they begin their Spring Break trip to Hilton Head Island, S.C., by taking on Lebanon Valley.
