Drew Splits Doubleheader With No. 14 Catholic

WASHINGTON – After having seven straight games postponed or cancelled because of weather, the Drew University baseball team finally took the field for the first time in two weeks on Saturday.  The Rangers (10-4, 1-1 Landmark) opened Landmark Conference play by splitting a doubleheader with No. 14 Catholic (15-2, 4-1 Landmark) at the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy.  The Cardinals posted a 3-0 win in the opener before Drew rallied to take the nightcap by a 6-4 count.

Catholic got on the board in the third inning of game one when Jack Hennessy ripped an RBI single.  Jake Crist then belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to increase the Cardinals' advantage to 3-0.

Drew's offense, meanwhile, was held to just three hits—two Mike Pettigrew (Kearny, N.J.) singles and a Zach Lipshitz (Scotch Plains, N.J.) double.  The Rangers' best scoring chance in the contest came in the top of the first, when they loaded the bases with one out.  However, Catholic pitcher Jon Mierzwa (2-0) got out of the jam by recording two of his 11 strikeouts.  Drew sent the tying run to the plate with nobody out in the top of the seventh, the last inning of the game, but a line drive and a double play ended the threat and gave the Cardinals a 3-0 victory.

Mierzwa (2-0) earned the win after giving up two hits and walking three in six innings.  Collin Brown allowed a hit and a walk in the seventh for his third save.  Paul Roth (Bethlehem, Pa.) (2-2) pitched well in defeat for the Rangers.  He yielded three runs on four hits, walked four and struck out three in 5.1 innings.  Brandon Radd (Edison, N.J.) recorded a walk and a strikeout in 0.2 innings of relief.

Game two was scoreless until the fifth, when Joseph Grossane (Merrick, N.Y.) lifted a sacrifice fly that knocked in Lipshitz.  However, in the bottom half of the inning, Brennan Cotter put the Cardinals ahead with a three-run homer to left.  In his next at bat, Cotter roped an RBI single to increase Catholic's advantage to 4-1.

In the top of the eighth, Drew struck for five runs.  Ryan Sabbag (Miami, Fla.) started the rally with a double down the right field line, then moved to third on Isaiah Mateo's (Hoboken, N.J.) bunt single.  After a run scored on a balk, Eric DiPietro (Devon, Pa.) and Pettigrew each walked to load the bases with nobody out.  That brought up Lipshitz, and he ripped a game-tying two-run double to center.  With two down, Brent Lincoln (Flemington, N.J.) roped a single to left that plated two runs, giving Drew a 6-4 lead.

Davis Fouts (Coral Springs, Fla.) pitched the final two innings and issued a walk in each, but kept the Cardinals off the board for his first save of the season.  Starting pitcher Pete Violante (Easton, Pa.) went 6.2 innings, yielding four runs on six hits with eight strikeouts and four walks.  Mike Mancuso (East Haven, Conn.) (1-0) earned the win after giving up a hit and recording a strikeout in 0.1 innings.

Offensively, the Rangers pounded out 12 hits.  Lipshitz was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Max Felsenstein (Glen Rock, N.J.) also ended up 2-for-5.  Grossane went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Lincoln's game-winning two-run double came in his only at bat.

Cotter drove in all four of Catholic's runs.  He finished 2-for-5 with a homer.  Danny O'Hagan, meanwhile, went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.  Starting pitcher Mason Belcher lasted five innings, giving up an unearned run on five hits and two walks while notching seven strikeouts.  Eric Moore allowed two hits and recorded a strikeout in 1.2 shutout innings.  Sean Carroll surrendered three runs on two hits and a walk in 0.1 innings, while Jack Ropelewski (1-1) took the loss after yielding two runs on two hits with two walks and a strikeout over one inning.  Nolan Lundholm pitched a scoreless ninth.  He was charged with a hit and a walk while striking out two.

The series finale is set for 12 p.m. on Sunday.  That contest will also be played at the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy.
