Rangers Clinch Catholic Series With Extra-Inning Victory

WASHINGTON – The Drew University baseball team (11-4, 2-1 Landmark) closed out a series win over 14th-ranked Catholic (15-3, 4-2 Landmark) with a 10-8, 11-inning victory at the Washington Nationals Youth Baseball Academy on Sunday.  Brent Lincoln (Flemington, N.J.) hit the go-ahead home run in the top of the 11th, as the Rangers improved to 3-1 in extra-inning games this season.

Drew got a run on Joseph Grossane's (Merrick, N.Y.) RBI double in the top of the first, but Catholic put up a four-spot in the bottom half of the inning to go up 4-1.  The Rangers responded with two runs in the top of the second, then tied the game on an RBI single by Ryan Sabbag (Miami, Fla.) in the fourth.  However, the Cardinals immediately answered back with two in the bottom of the fourth to regain the lead.

Eric DiPietro (Devon, Pa.) led off the fifth with an infield single before stealing second and scoring on Zach Lipshitz's (Scotch Plains, N.J.) single.  The next batter was Max Felsenstein (Glen Rock, N.J.), and he crushed a two-run homer to right that put the Rangers up 7-6.

Catholic tied it on an RBI double by Christian Jones in the bottom of the seventh.  The Rangers immediately regained the lead, though, when Felsenstein came around on a Grossane grounder in the top of the eighth.  In the bottom of the ninth, the Cardinals loaded the bases with one out on an error, a single and an intentional walk.  The next batter, pinch hitter Michael Doody also drew a free pass, forcing in the tying run and sending the contest into extra innings.

After each side went down in order in the 10th, Lincoln homered leading off the 11th.  DiPietro then ripped a one-out single before Lipshitz and Felsenstein both walked to load the bases.  That brought up Matthew Lange (Glen Rock, N.J.), and he was hit by a pitch, giving the Rangers an insurance tally.  With his team now leading 8-6, Brandon Radd (Edison, N.J.) came out of the Drew bullpen to pitch the bottom of the 11th.  He gave up a leadoff single, but retired the next three hitters to close out the Rangers' first series win over Catholic in Washington since joining the conference.

Felsenstein finished 1-for-4 while also walking three times.  He scored four runs and drove in two.  DiPietro went 2-for-4 with three runs scored, and Sabbag ended up 2-for-5 with an RBI.  Lange was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Lipshitz crossed the plate twice.  Jeff Serin (Hillsborough, N.J.) started on the mound and threw 0.2 innings.  He allowed four runs on four hits, walked two and struck out one.  Drew used seven pitchers in relief of Serin, with Davis Fouts (Coral Springs, Fla.) (1-1) earning the win after tossing 1.2 scoreless innings.  He didn't surrender a hit, issued one walk and also registered a strikeout.  Radd was credited with his first save.

For the Cardinals, Ryan Tracy went 4-for-6 with a run scored and an RBI.  Jones finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs, while Anthony Ferlise also knocked in a pair.  Jake Crist and Bailey Lewis, meanwhile, both scored twice.  Catholic used eight pitchers in the game, with starter David Gatley lasting 1.2 innings.  He was charged with three runs on two hits and six walks.  Eric Moore (0-1) took the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) on two hits while striking out one and walking one over 0.2 innings.

On Thursday, the Rangers resume their non-conference slate with a 3:30 p.m. matchup at Keystone (9-5).
