MADISON, N.J. –
The Drew University softball team began its home schedule with a Landmark Conference doubleheader against Catholic on Monday.  After rallying for an 8-6, nine-inning victory in game one, the Cardinals (8-8, 2-2 Landmark) posted an 8-1 victory over the Rangers (7-8, 0-4 Landmark) in the nightcap at the Drew Softball Complex.

Drew jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings in game one.  The Rangers got one in the first when Heather Ronchi (Leonia, N.J.) scored on an Adriana Rodriguez (Turnersville, N.J.) groundout, then added three more in the third.  After Jasmine Vera (Dumont, N.J.) drew a leadoff walk and Rodriguez reached on an infield single, Stephanie Burns (Bellmore, N.Y.) ripped a base hit that was just fair down the third base line, knocking in both runs.  Burns later came around on an RBI single by Vanessa Villahermosa (Woodbridge, N.J.).

Catholic put a run on the board in the top of the fifth, but the Rangers immediately responded in the bottom half of the inning.  Vera led off the frame with a triple to left and Rodriguez followed with a single up the middle that made it 5-1.

However, the Cardinals rallied for three runs in the sixth to pull within 5-4 before tying the game on Giselle Diaz's sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh.  Rodriguez doubled leading off the bottom of the seventh, but was left stranded on second and the contest moved into extra innings.

After both sides went down in order in the eighth, Catholic took the lead with three runs in the top of the ninth.  Alyssa Keane belted a solo homer to left, and Taylor Forgen knocked in a pair with a two-out double.  Drew picked up an unearned tally in the bottom half of the inning, but the Cardinals held on to close out an 8-6 victory.

Rodriguez went 4-for-5 with a run scored and two RBIs, while Vera was 2-for-3 with a triple and three runs scored.  Lauren Mastropierro (Randolph, N.J.) also had a pair of hits.  In addition to going 1-for-2 with a run scored and two RBIs, Burns (3-3) got the start in the circle and took the loss.  She yielded six runs on 14 hits, struck out one and walked two over eight innings.  Megan Hulmes (Hawthorne, N.J.) entered in the ninth and was charged with two runs on two hits and a walk.

Makayla Czan and Marissa DeBlasie each recorded three hits for the Cardinals, and Czan also drove in a pair.  Forgen, meanwhile, finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBIs.  Starting pitcher Sabrina Scott went four innings in the circle, surrendering five runs on nine hits while walking two.  Allie Lajeunesse (1-1) earned the win after holding the Rangers to an unearned run and two hits over five innings.  She struck out three and walked two.

In game two, Catholic scored three runs in the first and three more in the second.  The Cardinals then added a pair of runs in the top of the sixth.  Drew, meanwhile, was limited to just four hits and a first-inning unearned tally by Catholic starter Kelly Lynch (5-3).  She struck out two and waked one in the contest.

Vera finished game two 1-for-3 with a run scored and her second triple of the day, while Katie Grodski (Mepham, N.Y.) had a double.  Starting pitcher Victoria Avella (North Bergen, N.J.) (1-1) took the loss after yielding six runs on seven hits over two innings.  Hulmes tossed five innings of relief, giving up two runs on seven hits with a strikeout and a walk.

For the Cardinals, Czan went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while DeBlasie was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.  Hailey Horton finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, and Keane drove in a pair of runs.

On Tuesday, the Rangers welcome William Paterson (11-5) to the Drew Softball Complex for a 3 p.m. twinbill.
