William Paterson Takes Two From Drew

MADISON, N.J. – On Tuesday afternoon, the Drew University softball team took on William Paterson in a doubleheader at the Drew Sports Complex.  The Pioneers (13-5) won the first game by a 12-0 count, then rallied late for an 8-6 triumph over the Rangers (7-10) in the nightcap.

After scoring one in the first inning of game one, William Paterson erupted for seven runs in the top of the second.  The Pioneers added another in the third and two more in the fourth before closing out the scoring with a fifth-inning run.  Drew started the bottom of the fifth with back-to-back singles, but William Paterson got the runner at third on a bouncer back to the pitcher for the first out.  A double play then brought the game to an early conclusion, as the Pioneers earned a 12-0 win.

Sarah Byrnes pitched the first three innings and earned the win.  She allowed two hits, struck out five and walked one.  Caitlin Brennan yielded two hits and two walks over the final two innings.  Offensively, the Pioneers pounded out 15 hits.  Kara Molnar finished 4-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI, while Caitlyn Massaro was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs.  Eleni Lutas also went 3-for-3 and scored three times.

Heather Ronchi (Leonia, N.J.) reached base all three times she came up on a walk and two singles.  Meghan Beyer (North Arlington, N.J.) had a double and a walk in two plate appearances, while Megan Hulmes (Hawthorne, N.J.) singled in the fifth for Drew's only other hit.  She also pitched 3.2 innings, yielding four runs (two earned) on seven hits with two strikeouts and a walk.  Cara O'Leary (Staten Island, N.Y.) (2-2) got the start in the circle and took the loss.  She surrendered eight runs on eight hits and a walk in 1.1 innings.

In game two, Drew took an early lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the first.  After William Paterson tied it in the top of the second, Stephanie Burns (Bellmore, N.Y.) crushed her first career home run leading off the bottom half of the inning.  The Rangers then loaded the bases for Ronchi, who drew a walk to make it 3-1.  Drew picked up another unearned tally in the inning before adding two more in the third on Katie Grodski's (Mepham, N.Y.) double to left center.

However, William Paterson put up a four-spot in the top of the fourth to pull within 6-5.  The Pioneers tied it on Massaro's RBI double in the fifth and took the lead on a Christine Griffith sacrifice fly in the sixth.  After William Paterson added another run in the top of the seventh, Drew went down in order in the bottom half of the inning, as the Pioneers completed the doubleheader sweep with an 8-6 victory.

Burns (3-4) threw a complete game in the circle and took the loss.  She yielded eight runs (four earned) on 12 hits, struck out one and walked two.  In addition, Burns went 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI.  Grodski finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs, while Ronchi was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

For the Pioneers, Griffith finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBIs, while Massaro was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.  Molnar ended up 2-for-4 with two runs scored, and Lutas was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.  Andee Lupica started in the circle and surrendered three runs (one earned) on two hits and a walk over an inning-plus.  Alexis Davidson pitched 1.1 innings of relief, yielding three runs (one earned) and three hits with a walk.  Byrnes (8-3) picked up her second win of the day after tossing 4.2 shutout innings.  She allowed four hits and struck out four.

The Rangers are now off until April 5, when they visit Montclair State (10-4) for a 3 p.m. twinbill.  The doubleheader was originally scheduled for March 15, but postponed due to weather.
