Rangers Drop Twinbill at Montclair State

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The Drew University softball team returned to action on Thursday with a non-conference twinbill at Montclair State.  After taking the first game by an 8-5 count, the Red Hawks (13-5) completed the doubleheader sweep by notching an 8-0 win over the Rangers (7-12) in the nightcap at MSU Softball Stadium.

After Montclair State scored two runs in the first inning of game one, Drew cut its deficit in half in the top of the third.  Lauren Mastropierro (Randolph, N.J.) led off the inning with a single and moved to third on a Brooke Adams (Cedar Grove, N.J.) double.  With two out, Meghan Beyer (North Arlington, N.J.) ripped a single to left that knocked in the run and pulled the Rangers within 2-1.

However, the Red Hawks got two runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth to extend the margin to 8-1.  Megan Hulmes (Hawthorne, N.J.) induced a ground out with the game-ending run on third to extend the game into the sixth, and the Rangers responded with a three-spot in the inning.  Adriana Rodriguez (Turnersville, N.J.) and Beyer led off the frame with back-to-back singles before Hulmes ripped an RBI double to center.  Katie Grodski (Mepham, N.Y.) followed with an RBI single, and another run came across on a double play, making it 8-4.

Drew picked up another run in the top of the seventh when Heather Ronchi (Leonia, N.J.) led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on Rodriguez's double.  She took third on a wild pitch, but was left stranded, as Montclair State closed out an 8-5 victory.

Rodriguez and Beyer each finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, as Drew collected 10 hits in the opener.  In addition to roping an RBI double, Hulmes pitched two innings of relief.  She was charged with four runs on six hits and walked one.  Starter Stephanie Burns (Bellmore, N.Y.) (3-5) went four innings and took the loss.  She surrendered four runs on nine hits, walked two and recorded a strikeout.

Elena Radesich and Valentina Cucci both had three hits for Montclair State, and Radesich also scored twice.  Amber Powers finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Alana Luna belted a two-run homer as part of a 2-for-4 effort.  Kaylee Powers, meanwhile, crossed the plate three times.  Kiara Ruiz (6-2) earned the win after allowing four runs on seven hits with two walks and a pair of strikeouts over five innings.  Cucci tossed the final two innings, giving up a run and three hits.

In game two, Drew loaded the bases with two out in the top of the first.  Jasmine Vera (Dumont, N.J.) reached on an error before Rodriguez and Beyer each singled to bring up Ronchi.  However, she grounded out to end the inning.

Montclair State then put up a five-spot in the bottom of the first to take a 5-0 lead.  The Red Hawks added three more in the third to go up 8-0.  Drew put a pair of runners on in the fourth and got a leadoff single from Mastropierro in the fifth, but failed to score each time, and the contest ended as an 8-0 Montclair State victory.

Grodski had the only other Drew hit in the game, a two-out single in the fourth.  Victoria Avella (North Bergen, N.J.) (1-2) took the loss after yielding eight runs on 11 hits and two walks over four innings.

For the Red Hawks, Amber Powers and Victoria Gehring each finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Samantha DiClementi and Luna drove in two runs apiece.  Nicole Majewski (5-1) struck out one in a five-inning, four-hit shutout.

On Saturday, the Rangers (0-4 Landmark) resume their Landmark Conference slate with a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Juniata (5-11, 0-2 Landmark).
