Big First Inning Gives Rangers Split at Juniata

HUNTINGDON, Pa. – The Drew University softball team (8-13, 1-5 Landmark) scored 11 runs in the first inning en route to a 14-4 victory over Juniata (6-12, 1-3 Landmark) in game two of a doubleheader at West End Field on Saturday afternoon.  The Eagles took the first game by a 7-4 count.

After dropping the opener, the Rangers seized control of game two with their highest-scoring inning since a 19-run outburst at Merchant Marine on April 20, 2011.  The 11 first-inning runs were also more than Drew had tallied in all but one of its first 20 games this season.

Heather Ronchi (Leonia, N.J.) got the rally started with a leadoff single, and she scored on Katie Grodski's (Mepham, N.Y.) RBI single.  After RBI singles by Meghan Beyer (North Arlington, N.J.) and Lauren Mastropierro (Randolph, N.J.) and a bases loaded walk to Megan Hulmes (Hawthorne, N.J.), Brooke Adams (Cedar Grove, N.J.) singled home a pair to make it 6-0.  Ronchi followed with her second hit of the inning, an RBI single, before Adams came around on a Grodski groundout.  Adriana Rodriguez (Turnersville, N.J.) then capped the outburst with her first collegiate home run, a three-run shot.

Juniata got one back in the bottom of the first, but the Rangers added a run on Mastropierro's bases loaded walk in the third before picking up another on Rodriguez's RBI double in the fourth.  After Drew scored an unearned tally in the top of the fifth, the Eagles tallied two in the bottom half of the inning to make the final score 14-4.  With the five-inning victory, the Rangers snapped their 11-game skid.

Every Drew starter had at least one hit and scored at least one run in the contest.  Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a homer, two runs scored and four RBIs, while Jasmine Vera (Dumont, N.J.) finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored.  Ronchi was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, and Sophie Sirota (Windsor, Conn.) also scored twice.  In addition to going 1-for-2 at the plate, Hulmes (2-4) tossed a complete game in the circle.  She allowed four runs on six hits, walked six and struck out one.

Six different Eagles singled off Hulmes, with Jennifer Carthew also scoring a run and driving in another.  Starting pitcher Anna Baran (2-6) took the loss after surrendering six runs on four hits and two walks in 0.1 innings.  Chrisi Lerchen gave up five runs, four hits and a walk in 0.1 innings, while Alyssa Fasolo tossed the final 4.1 innings and was charged with three runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks.  She also recorded a strikeout.

In game one, Juniata jumped out to an early lead with a pair of runs in the first.  After the Eagles increased their advantage to 3-0 with an unearned tally in the bottom of the third, the Rangers scored twice in the top of the fifth.  Grodski ripped an RBI single before Adams scored on a passed ball to make it 3-2.

However, the Eagles put up a three-spot in the bottom of the fifth before adding another run in the sixth.  Drew sent the tying run to the plate after Rodriguez's one-out, bases-loaded double in the top of the seventh, but a strikeout and a groundout closed out Juniata's 7-4 victory.

Rodriguez finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, giving her three extra-base hits and six RBIs in the twinbill.  Adams was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Ronchi went 1-for-3 with a run.  Stephanie Burns (Bellmore, N.Y.) (3-6) tossed a complete game in the circle.  She allowed seven runs (six earned) on 16 hits and struck out three.

For the Eagles, Alicia Regnault ended up 3-for-3 with an RBI, and Molly Ulrich was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.  Alyssa Shedlock went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Kerigan Ammerman finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs.  Erin Pfeffer (4-4) surrendered four runs (three earned) on eight hits, walked three and struck out one in a complete-game effort.

Drew plays 10 of its 14 remaining contests at home, starting with a 3 p.m. twinbill against Lehman (6-15) on Tuesday.  The doubleheader was originally scheduled for March 22, but was postponed due to poor field conditions caused by winter weather.
