Drew Sweeps Twinbill With Lehman

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University softball team extended its winning streak to three straight with a doubleheader sweep of Lehman on Tuesday.  After notching an 11-2 victory in the opener, the Rangers (10-13) beat the Lightning (6-19) by a 2-1 count in game two of the twinbill at the Drew Softball Complex.

After Lehman took a 2-0 lead in game one, the Rangers put up a four-spot in the bottom of the second to take the lead.  Three consecutive bases loaded walks resulted in the first three runs, then Drew added another unearned tally to make it 4-2.

Drew increased its cushion to 10-2 with six runs in the third.  Heather Ronchi (Leonia, N.J.) ripped an RBI single to right before a pair of runs scored when Vanessa Villahermosa (Woodbridge, N.J.) reached on an error.  After an Adriana Rodriguez (Turnersville, N.J.) sacrifice fly, Meghan Beyer (North Arlington, N.J.) drove in a pair with a single to left.  However, she was thrown out trying to advance to second on the play, ending the inning.  The Rangers then picked up another tally on Villahermosa's bases-loaded walk in the fourth before Cara O'Leary (Staten Island, N.Y.) shut Lehman down in the fifth to close out the 11-2 victory.

O'Leary (3-2) held Lehman to just three hits in the contest, all in the first two innings.  She retired 11 of the final 12 batters she faced, with the only blemish coming on a one-out hit batter in the fifth.  O'Leary struck out three and walked one while allowing two runs in a five-inning complete game.  She also went 1-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored.

Ronchi finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Villahermosa drove in three runs and scored another.  Sophie Sirota (Windsor, Conn.) had two hits, and Brooke Adams (Cedar Grove, N.J.) crossed the plate twice.

Hailey Davila and Genesis Paulino recorded RBIs for the Lightning, while Maranda Diaz and Stephany Cruz scored the Lehman runs.  Tiffany Adames (1-2) took the loss in the circle after giving up 11 runs (four earned) on eight hits and eight walks over four innings.

Game two was a stark contrast to the opener, as Victoria Avella (North Bergen, N.J.) and Diamond Villegas engaged in a pitchers' duel.  Drew broke through for a run in the bottom of the third when Adams roped a double that was just fair down the left field line before Ronchi followed with an RBI single.

Diaz led off the Lehman sixth with a single and had evidently stolen second base to move into scoring position with Villegas at the plate.  However, the umpires determined that she had left first base early and gave Drew Head Coach Erica Mehalick the option of taking the out or the result of the pitch (which was strike one).  Mehalick chose the out, and that proved to be a crucial decision, as Villegas crushed a long home run to center field that tied the game at 1-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, Rodriguez roped a leadoff double to the gap in right center before moving to third on a wild pitch.  She then came around with the go-ahead run on Sirota's groundout to second.

An Andrelina Gil single and a Diaz double gave Lehman runners on second and third with two out in the top of the seventh.  With first base open and the go-ahead run on second, the Rangers opted to walk Villegas and load the bases for Caitlin Vernon.  She sent a grounder towards short, and Villahermosa got the runner advancing to third to close out a 2-1 Drew victory.

Avella (2-2) tossed a complete game seven-hitter.  She gave up one run, struck out three and walked one.  Offensively, Ronchi paced the Rangers.  She collected a pair of hits and drove in a run.  Sirota was 1-for-2 with the game-winning RBI, while Adams and Rodriguez each scored a run.

Lehman outhit Drew 7-6 in the contest, with Diaz and Gil both recording a pair of hits.  In addition to belting a solo home run, Villegas (2-8) went the distance in the circle.  She surrendered two runs on six hits, struck out six and walked one.

On Wednesday, the Rangers continue their six-game homestand by taking on local rival FDU-Florham (10-12) in the annual "Battle of Madison."  The doubleheader is set to get underway at 3 p.m.  It will be the Devils' first visit to the Drew Softball Complex since 2015.
