Ronchi Sets Hits Record, But Rangers Fall to FDU-Florham

MADISON, N.J. – With a first-inning single in game two of the Drew University softball team's doubleheader against local rival FDU-Florham on Wednesday, Heather Ronchi (Leonia, N.J.) became the Rangers' all-time hits leader.  It was Ronchi's 153rd career hit, breaking the record previously held by Shanna Peras (2002-05).  The Rangers (10-15) were unable to come away with a win, however, as the Devils (12-12) followed up their 8-2 game one victory with a 10-2 triumph in the nightcap at the Drew Softball Complex.

Ronchi sent a grounder just past the diving third baseman leading off the bottom of the first for her record-breaking hit.  She took second on the play, as the ball caromed off the shortstop's glove and into left field.  Ronchi then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a passed ball, giving the Rangers a 1-0 lead.  Drew threatened for more, as Adriana Rodriguez (Turnersville, N.J.) and Meghan Beyer (North Arlington, N.J.) both walked with one out, but FDU-Florham starter Linda Rizzo was able to get out of it on a line drive and a strikeout.

The Devils then took the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the second.  FDU-Florham added two more in the third before putting up a three-spot in the fourth to make it 7-1.  After Drew picked up an unearned tally in the bottom of the sixth, the Devils responded with three in the top of the seventh.  The Rangers put runners on first and second with two outs in the bottom of the second, but a called strike three ended it, and FDU-Florham earned the sweep with a 10-2 victory.

Drew collected nine hits in the contest, with Lauren Mastropierro (Randolph, N.J.) roping a pair of singles.  Rodriguez's third-inning double was the Rangers' only extra-base hit.  In addition to going 1-for-4 at the plate, Megan Hulmes (Hawthorne, N.J.) (2-4) tossed a complete game in the circle.  She allowed 10 runs (six earned) on 15 hits, struck out one and walked two.

Taylor Tobey were 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs for the Devils.  Michelle Mangini, Francesca Shipe and Tara Morash all had two hits, a run scored and an RBI, while Gabby Young crossed the plate twice.  Linda Rizzo (4-5) was credited with the win after surrendering one unearned run on six hits in five innings.  She struck out two and walked two.  Abbey Scarengelli pitched two innings of relief, giving up an unearned run on three hits with two strikeouts and a walk.

In game one, FDU-Florham got a run in the top of the first before the Rangers immediately answered.  Ronchi led off with an infield single, stole second, and scored on Jasmine Vera's (Dumont, N.J.) double over the center fielder's head.

It would remain 1-1 until the fourth, when Taylor Torre led off for the Devils with a long home run to left field.  Later in the inning, Francesca Shipe crushed a two-run blast to left, giving FDU-Florham a 4-1 lead.  The Devils then scored four in the fifth to increase their advantage to 8-1.  Drew picked up a run in the seventh to make the final score 8-2, as FDU-Florham opened the "Battle of Madison" with a victory.

Vanessa Villahermosa (Woodbridge, N.J.) and Ronchi each had a pair of hits in the opener, with Ronchi's fifth-inning single tying the record she'd break in game two.  They both scored a run, as well.  Stephanie Burns (Mepham, N.Y.) (3-7) went 4.1 innings in the circle, allowing eight runs (five earned) on seven hits while striking out three and walking one.  Victoria Avella (North Bergen, N.J.) hurled 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, limiting the Devils to three hits and picking up a strikeout.

Torre finished a triple short of the cycle for FDU-Florham.  She was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs.  Rebecca DeCarlo also went 3-for-4 at the plate in game one.  She added two RBIs and a run scored.  Shipe was credited two RBIs on her homer, one of her two hits in the contest.  Kaleigh Oplinger (2-3) pitched the first six innings, giving up one run on five hits and striking out three.  Megan Zaccario was charged with a run and two hits in the seventh.

On Saturday, Drew (1-5 Landmark) concludes its six-game homestand with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against No. 10 Moravian (17-3, 6-0 Landmark).
