Drew Splits Twinbill With La Roche

FORT PIERCE, Fla. – The Drew University baseball team saw its five-game winning streak come to an end with a 6-5 loss to La Roche in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday.  The Rangers (6-2) rebounded in game two, however, notching a 9-6 victory over the Redhawks (3-1) at the Lanwood Sports Complex.

After La Roche jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game one, Drew put up a four-spot in the top of the fourth.  Joseph Grossane (Merrick, N.Y.) walked, Anthony Tagilaferro (Monroe Township, N.J.) singled and Eric DiPietro (Devon, Pa.) drew a walk to load the bases with two out.  Isaiah Mateo (Hoboken, N.J.) then delivered a bases-clearing double that put the Rangers in front 3-2.  Ryan Sabbag (Miami, Fla.) followed with an RBI single that made it 4-2, and an RBI double by Grossane in the fifth increased that advantage to 5-2.

It would stay that way until the bottom of the seventh, which was the final scheduled inning.  After a pair of errors to start the frame, La Roche scored on a run when Jonathan Spina bounced into a fielder's choice.  Shane Roebuck then ripped a two-out, two-run double that tied the game at 5-5 and chased Drew starter Paul Roth (Bethlehem, Pa.).  Jay Novak was walked intentionally to set up the force, but Philip Pieto followed with a walk-off double that gave La Roche a 6-5 victory.

Jayson Mitch (Easton, Pa.) had a pair of hits, while Mateo was 1-for-3 with a run scored and three RBIs.  Grossane, meanwhile, went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.  Roth (2-1) nearly went the distance in the loss, tossing 6.2 innings.  He allowed six runs, only two of which were earned, on 10 hits, struck out five and walked one.

Three different Redhawks recorded multiple hits in the game, as La Roche outhit Drew 11-8.  Pieto finished 2-for-2 with a walk and two RBIs, while Spina was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a pair of RBIs.  Roebuck went 1-for-4, scored a run, and drove in two others.  Nick Tunstall started on the mound and yielded five runs (four earned) on seven hits over 4.2 innings.  He also struck out three and walked two.  Jake Seymour (1-0) picked up the win after giving up one hit and one walk with a strikeout in 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.

In game two, the Rangers struck early, scoring five times in the bottom of the first.  The big hits in the inning were RBI singles by Grossane, Mateo and Max Felsenstein (Glen Rock, N.J.).  Drew also picked up a run when DiPietro grounded into a fielder's choice, and he later scored on an error.

La Roche trimmed its deficit to 5-2 in the top of the third, but Drew responded with four runs in the bottom half of the inning.  Felsenstein roped an RBI single before Zach Lipshitz (Scotch Plains, N.J.) doubled home another run.  Felsenstein scored and Lipshitz moved to third on Mitch's RBI groundout, and Lipshitz came home on a wild pitch to make it 9-2.

However, the Redhawks started the fifth inning with four consecutive hits, two of which knocked in runs.  La Roche scored another run on a fielder's choice, trimming the Rangers' advantage to 9-5.  After pulling within three on a Johnathan Melendez single in the seventh, La Roche loaded the bases with two out.  Davis Fouts (Coral Springs, Fla.) retired Pieto on a grounder, though, and Drew closed out the 9-6 victory.

Felsenstein was the only Ranger with a two-hit effort in game two, and he also drove in a pair.  Lipshitz, DiPietro and Mateo, meanwhile, each scored twice to go along with a hit and an RBI apiece.  Pete Violante (Easton, Pa.) earned the win after going four-plus innings on the mound.  He allowed four runs on six hits, struck out five and walked one.  Jendy Castillo (Newark, N.J.) gave up one run and three hits in 0.1 innings before Fouts went the final 2.2 innings, surrendering one run on four hits while picking up three strikeouts.

Four different Redhawks had two hits in the game, as La Roche held a 13-8 advantage in that category.  Professori collected two hits and two RBIs, while Elmo Trickett finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI.  Starting pitcher Garren Telez (0-1) took the loss after yielding nine runs (three earned) on eight hits and four walks with a strikeout in 2.2 innings.  Jesse Savisky tossed 3.1 scoreless relief innings, recording three strikeouts and a walk.

Drew continues its Florida Gulf Coast Spring Training trip with an 11 a.m. matchup against Immaculata (2-3) on Monday.
