Rangers Topple Centenary For First Victory of Season

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. – For the Drew University men's lacrosse team, it was worth the wait.  In a game that was twice postponed because of weather, the Rangers (1-3) earned their first victory of the season, a 14-5 triumph over Centenary (1-2) at J.E. Reeves Jr. Field on Monday afternoon.  The win was Doug Sage's first as Drew's head coach.

It was a 1-1 game when Centenary received a three-minute penalty for an illegal stick at the start of the second quarter.  Drew scored three times during the ensuing man-up situation to take a 4-1 lead.  After the Cyclones got back within two at 5-3, Kyle MacDonnell (Niantic, Conn.) and Jack Crowley (Madison, N.J.) found the back of the net late in the second quarter to increase the Rangers' advantage to 7-3 at the break.

Drew opened the second half with four straight tallies to extend the margin to 11-3, and the Rangers led 12-4 entering the fourth quarter.  MacDonnell registered his third goal of the contest midway through the final period to cap the scoring in the 14-5 Drew victory.

Kevin Goettlich (Florham Park, N.J.) tallied four points for the Rangers, finishing with three points and an assist to go along with three ground balls.  MacDonnell also had a hat trick, while Crowley added two goals and an assist.  In addition to scoring the first two goals of his collegiate career, Jonny Bronander (Glen Ridge, N.J.) picked up a team-high five ground balls.  Goalkeeper Nate Sanders (Annapolis, Md.) (1-3) made 10 saves in the win.

Kyle Mott paced Centenary with three goals, and he also secured three ground balls.  Chris Snow distributed a pair of assists, while Chris Howell won 12 faceoffs and picked up eight ground balls.  Spencer Stachowiak added four ground balls for the Cyclones.  Wayne Sanfreed (1-2) got the start in net and made eight saves while allowing 12 goals over 41:23.  Noah Jones played the final 8:37, stopping two Drew shots and giving up two goals.

The Rangers will have a quick turnaround before returning to action.  Drew visits Arcadia (3-1) at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
