Drew Moves to 4-0 For First Time Since 1996

FORT MYERS, Fla. – After opening the season with a pair of victories on Sunday, the Drew University softball team earned two more wins on Monday to improve to 4-0 for the first time since 1996.  The Rangers defeated Rivier (0-2-1), 13-4 in five innings before knocking off NJCU (0-4) by a 7-2 count in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at the Century Link Sports Complex.

Rivier scored three in the top of the first in Drew's first game of the day, but the Rangers immediately responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.  After Brooke Adams (Cedar Grove, N.J.) reached on a bunt single and went all the way to third on an error, she broke for home on Heather Ronchi's (Leonia, N.J.) ground ball to third and got in under the tag.  A Katie Grodski (Mepham, N.Y.) sacrifice fly made it 3-2, then Meghan Beyer (North Arlington, N.J.) tied the game with an RBI single to center.

The Raiders went back in front with an unearned run in the top of the second before a two-run single by Adriana Rodriguez (Turnersville, N.J.) in the bottom of the third gave Drew its first lead of the game.  The Rangers then increased that cushion to 9-4 with a four-spot in the bottom of the fourth.  Adams ripped a two-run double, then two more runs scored when Grodski reached on an error.

Drew added four more in the fifth to bring the game to an early conclusion.  After the Rangers loaded the bases with one out, Ronchi knocked in a pair with a single through the right side.  She then stole second before scoring, along with Adams, on a Rodriguez base hit that made it 13-4 and putting the run rule into effect.

Adams reached base and scored all four times she came up against Rivier.  She had three hits, including a double, and knocked in a pair.  Ronchi finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs, while Rodriguez was 2-for-3 with a run scored and four RBIs.  Sophie Sirota (Windsor, Conn.) and Jasmine Vera (Dumont, N.J.) each went 2-for-3 with a run scored, as well, as the Rangers outhit Rivier 13-6.

Victoria Avella (North Bergen, N.J.) (1-0) earned the win in her first collegiate start.  She allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits, struck out seven and walked two in the five-inning complete game, with most of the damage against her coming early.

For the Raiders, Tayla LaGrand finished 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI, while Evelyn Susko had a two-run single in her only at bat.  Starting pitcher Taylor Roswell (0-1) suffered the loss after yielding nine runs (three earned) on nine hits with four strikeouts and a walk in 3.2 innings.  Kerri Hegarty pitched the final 0.2 innings, giving up four runs on four hits.  She also issued a walk.

Against NJCU, Drew jumped out to an early lead on Rodriguez's two-run single in the bottom of the first.  The Rangers then increased their advantage to 7-0 with a five-spot in the third.  Adams, Vera and Ronchi all singled to load the bases with nobody out before three successive walks resulted in three Drew runs.  After Sirota lifted a sacrifice fly to center, Michelle Nestor (Hazlet, N.J.) followed with an RBI base hit.

NJCU got on the board in the top of the sixth when Dayana Flores stole home.  The Gothic Knights loaded the bases with only one out, but Megan Hulmes (Hawthorne, N.Y.) got out of the jam with a foul popup and a strikeout.  After Arianna Scrimo led off the top of the seventh with a single, Flores smoked a triple to the wall in left center that made it 7-2.  However, Hulmes retired the final two banners to close out the 7-2 victory and keep her team undefeated on the young season.

Hulmes (1-0) became the fourth different Drew pitcher in as many outings to earn a complete game win in the circle.  She gave up two runs (one earned) on six hits, struck out four and walked four.

Offensively, the Rangers were paced by Adams and Ronchi, who had two hits and scored two runs apiece.  Rodriguez, meanwhile, went 1-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and three RBIs.  Overall, Drew had eight hits in the contest, and the Rangers also drew nine walks.

Christina Mezey (0-4) went the distance in the circle for the Gothic Knights, yielding seven runs on eight hits, striking out five and walking nine.  Flores had two of NJCU's six hits.  She contributed an RBI and a run scored, as well.

On Tuesday, the Rangers head back to Naples for a pair of games.  Drew takes on Geneva (0-0) at 9 a.m. and meets Pitt-Bradford (1-1) at 11 a.m.
