Late Rally Falls Short, As Rangers Drop Pair

NAPLES, Fla. – After getting off to a 4-0 start, the Drew University softball team suffered its first two losses of the season on Tuesday.  The Rangers (4-2) dropped a 4-0 decision to Geneva (3-0), then saw a seventh-inning rally fall short against Pitt-Bradford, as the Panthers (3-1) earned a 6-5 victory at North Collier Park in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

In Drew's first game of the day, Geneva scored a run in the bottom of the first when Hailey Sainato led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on an error and came home on a wild pitch.  Sainato gave the Golden Tornadoes a 2-0 lead in the third when she drew a leadoff walk and swiped second and third before scoring on a throwing error.

Geneva then increased its lead to 4-0 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth.  With two down and the bases loaded, Kyleigh Jo Ward lifted a popup that was just out of Katie Grodski's (Mepham, N.Y.) reach at shortstop.  It dropped into shallow left for a two-run single, doubling the Golden Tornadoes' advantage.

Drew, meanwhile, managed only six hits off Geneva hurler Bobbi Ann Theiss, five singles and a Jasmine Vera (Dumont, N.J.) double.  Adriana Rodriguez (Turnersville, N.J.) had a pair of singles in the contest.  Stephanie Burns (Bellmore, N.Y.) (1-1) took the loss after surrendering four runs (two earned) on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts in a six-inning complete game.

For the Golden Tornadoes, Theiss (2-0) tossed a complete game on just 62 pitches.  She didn't issue a walk or record a strikeout.  Sainato reached base in all three of her plate appearances and scored twice, while Ward had a pair of RBIs.

Against Pitt-Bradford, the Rangers put a run on the board in the top of the first when Rodriguez singled home Grodski, who had doubled.  The Panthers batted around in the bottom half of the inning, though, scoring four times to take a 4-1 lead.  Liz Dzurisin ripped a two-run double and Jenna Fellows capped the rally with a two-run single that was just fair down the right field line.

However, Drew immediately answered back with three in the top of the second.  After Sophie Sirota (Windsor, Conn.) and Vanessa Villahermosa (Woodbridge, N.J.) started the inning with back-to-back singles, the Rangers loaded the bases when Pitt-Bradford tried to get the out at third on Michelle Nestor's (Hazlet, N.J.) grounder back to the circle.  Vera followed with an RBI single to left, then Brooke Adams (Cedar Grove, N.J.) knocked in a run on a bloop single to second base.  With two down, Rodriguez sent a grounder towards short, and the Panthers again went for the out at third.  Vera was safe, though, allowing Nestor to come in with the tying run.

Pitt-Bradford regained the lead when two runs scored on a throwing error in the bottom of the third before Drew closed the gap to 6-5 on Rodriguez's RBI double in the sixth.  The Rangers put the go-ahead run on base in the seventh after Nestor and Vera connected for back-to-back two-out singles.  That brought up Lauren Mastropierro (Randolph, N.J.), who fouled off pitch after two-strike pitch before popping one to first base that was snagged for the final out of the Panthers' 6-5 victory.

Rodriguez finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs, and Adams was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.  Sirota and Nestor each had two hits and a run scored, while Vera added two hits and an RBI.  Megan Hulmes (Hawthorne, N.J.) (1-1) went the distance in the circle, allowing six runs (four earned) on 13 hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Fellowes was 3-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs for the Panthers, while Madison East finished 3-for-4 with a run scored.  Grace Dadzaa went 2-for-3 with a run scored, and Dzursin contributed two RBIs.  Starting pitcher Morgan Bellush (1-0) lasted four innings in the circle and earned the win.  She surrendered four runs (two earned) on seven hits, struck out four and walked two.  Kerrigan Hoffman earned the save after yielding one run on six hits with a strikeout over the final three innings.

The Rangers will have Wednesday off before returning to action with a pair of games on Thursday.  Drew takes on Waynesburg (4-0) at 9 a.m., then squares off with Kenyon (5-1) at 11 a.m.
