Drew Registers Pair of One-Run Wins

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Drew University softball team used a big inning in each game to notch a pair of victories at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on Thursday.  The Rangers (6-2) scored four in the second inning of a 5-4 win over Waynesburg (5-2), then, after putting up a seven-spot in the top of the first, held on for a 9-8 triumph over Kenyon (8-2) at the Century Link Sports Complex.

Waynesburg scored an unearned run in the second inning of Drew's first game, but the Rangers responded with a four-spot in the bottom half of the inning.  Heather Ronchi (Leonia, N.J.) drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a groundout and took third on a wild pitch before scoring on Michelle Nestor's (Hazlet, N.J.) single to left.  Nestor came across on Lauren Mastropierro's (Randolph, N.J.) double to right, then, after a Brooke Adams (Cedar Grove, N.J.) walk, Jasmine Vera (Dumont, N.J.) ripped a two-run single to left that gave Drew a 4-1 lead.

After the Rangers picked up an insurance run on Ronchi's RBI single in the bottom of the fourth, the Yellow Jackets rallied for three runs in the top of the fifth.  Catherine Allstatt, Cheyenne Wasko and Tara Staley all ripped RBI singles before Cara O'Leary (Staten Island, N.Y.) escaped of the jam with a popup and a line drive.  Waynesburg got a two-out hit in the sixth and again in the seventh, but O'Leary retired the next batter each time, as Drew notched a 5-4 win.

Ronchi and Nestor both had two hits against Waynesburg, while Vera drove in a pair of runs.  Mastropierro, meanwhile, finished 1-for-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI.  O'Leary (2-0) went the distance in the circle, yielding four runs (two earned) on nine hits while striking out two and walking one.

For Waynesburg, Allstatt ended up 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.  Courtney Syfert went 2-for-4 with a run scored, and Staley was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Starting pitcher Emma Kubalak (1-2) took the loss after surrendering four runs on three hits and four walks.  She also recorded a strikeout in two innings of work.  Miranda Bowers tossed the final four innings, allowing one run on seven hits, striking out two and walking two.

Against Kenyon, Drew erupted for seven runs in the top of the first.  The Rangers started the game with three consecutive singles before Adriana Rodriguez (Turnersville, N.J.) walked and Katie Grodski (Mepham, N.Y.) drove in a run on a fielder's choice.  After Meghan Beyer's (North Arlington, N.J.) RBI groundout, Sophie Sirota (Windsor, Conn.) made it 4-0 with a single to center.  Grodski scored on a wild pitch before Ronchi, in her second at-bat of the inning, deposited a two-run double to the gap in right center.

Kenyon got on the board in the bottom of the third, but Beyer made it 8-1 with an RBI double to left in the top of the fifth.  The Ladies rallied for five runs in the bottom half of the inning, though, cutting the Rangers' advantage to 8-6.

Stephanie Burns (Bellmore, N.Y.) got out of the inning when Grace Pilz was thrown out at second trying to extend a single into a double.  She then helped her own cause in the seventh with an RBI single to right that gave Drew an insurance tally.  After the first two Kenyon batters in the bottom of the seventh singled, Burns was relieved by Megan Hulmes (Hawthorne, N.J.), who gave up an infield single that loaded the bases before striking out the next two hitters.

It looked like Drew had sealed the victory when Nicole Horita sent a grounder towards second, but it was misplayed and two runs ended up scoring on the error.  With the tying run on third, the next batter, Amanda Coyle worked the count full before Hulmes got a called third strike to finish off the 9-8 victory.

Five different Drew players had a multi-hit effort against Kenyon, as the Rangers tallied 13 hits in the contest.  Ronchi was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs, while Grodski went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.  Rodriguez also scored twice.  In addition to finishing 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, Burns (2-1) earned the win in the circle.  She tossed six-plus innings, allowing eight runs (five earned) on 12 hits to go along with two strikeouts and a walk.  Hulmes recorded the save after striking out three of the five batters she faced.  She also gave up a hit.

Emily Buckwalter and Britny Patterson each went 3-for-4 with two runs scored for Kenyon, and Buckwalter also tallied three RBIs.  Madi Maldonado also scored twice after going 2-for-3 at the plate.  Starting pitcher Keely Sweet (5-2) lasted just 0.2 innings.  She was charged with seven runs (four earned) on six hits and a walk.  Jace Juliano, who retired the first 11 Rangers she faced, allowed two runs and seven hits in 6.1 innings of relief.

On Friday, the Rangers will play their final two games of the trip.  Drew faces Crown (0-6) at 9 a.m. before taking on Albion (5-5) at 11 a.m.
