Rangers Drop Back-and-Forth Affair at NJCU

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Drew University baseball team continued its busy week by visiting NJCU on Wednesday afternoon.  In the makeup of a contest that was originally postponed on March 22, the Rangers (13-8) dropped a 9-7 decision to the Gothic Knights (13-8) at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex.

After NJCU took a 2-0 lead on back-to-back home runs by Dan Berardi and Lenin Gomez in the bottom of the second, Drew put up a five-spot in the top of the third.  Eric DiPietro (Devon, Pa.) started the rally with a double down the left field line, and he scored on Jayson Mitch's (Easton, Pa.) RBI single.  Consecutive RBI hits by Max Felsenstein (Glen Rock, N.J.), Ryan Sabbag (Miami, Fla.) and Joseph Grossane (Merrick, N.Y.) made it 4-1 Rangers before another run came across on Brent Lincoln's (Flemington, N.J.) groundout.

NJCU pulled within 5-3 on Juan Pena's fourth-inning home run before Drew added two more in the top of the seventh.  DiPietro ripped an RBI double, then, after Mitch walked, Zach Lipshitz (Scotch Plains, N.J.) lifted a sacrifice fly to left.

However, the Gothic Knights scored five times in the bottom of the seventh to regain the lead.  After Nick LoGatto drew a bases loaded walk, Berardi belted a grand slam to left that put NJCU back in front.  The Gothic Knights added an insurance tally on Jesse Kraft's RBI single in the eighth before retiring Drew in order in the ninth to close out the 7-5 victory.

DiPietro had three hits, including two doubles, and an RBI for the Rangers.  Lincoln and Mitch each went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while Grossane was 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Starting pitcher Mike Mancuso (East Haven, Conn.) lasted four innings.  He surrendered three runs on five hits, struck out two and walked one.  After Brandon Radd (Edison, N.J.) and Brian Pascale (Basking Ridge, N.J.) both tossed a scoreless inning, Davis Fouts (Coral Springs, Fla.) (1-1) allowed five runs on three hits with two walks and a strikeout in 0.2 innings.  He took the loss.  Vinny Doren (Berkley Heights, N.J.) finished up on the mound, yielding one run, one hit and one walk in 1.1 innings.

Berardi tallied five RBIs on his two home runs.  Kraft also had two hits, while Pena scored twice.  Nate Facey got the start and threw two innings.  He gave up five runs on six hits, struck out two and walked two.  Kyle McCabe pitched 3.2 innings of shutout relief, allowing three hits and recording a strikeout.  After Dan Foley surrendered two runs, three hits and two walks in 0.2 innings, Anthony Carfora (4-0) earned the win by holding the Rangers to a hit and a walk while notching two strikeouts in 2.2 innings of work.

On Thursday, the Rangers return to Doc Young Field for a 4 p.m. matchup with CCNY (8-12).  The contest was originally scheduled for March 13, but postponed due to weather.
