Drew Snaps Skid With 10-3 Win Over CCNY

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University baseball team (14-8) pounded out 16 hits en route to a 10-3 victory over CCNY (8-15) at Doc Young Field on Thursday.  With the win, the Rangers snapped a two-game losing streak.

CCNY scored an unearned run in the top of the second, but the Rangers responded with four in their half of the inning.  After Drew loaded the bases with no one out, Bryan Reagle (Easton, Pa.) lifted a sacrifice fly to left that tied the game.  Mike Pettigrew (Kearney, N.J.) reached on an error to load the bases again, then Jayson Mitch (Easton, Pa.) sent a wicked shot past first base into right field for two runs.  The Rangers added another on Zach Lipshitz's (Scotch Plains, N.J.) RBI single.

Matthew Lange (Glen Rock, N.J.) led off the third with a homer to right center, and a Mitch sacrifice fly in the fourth increased the Rangers' lead to 6-1.  Drew picked up two more in the fifth, as Max Felsenstein (Glen Rock, N.J.) perfectly executed a bunt with a runner on third for an RBI single, then came around on an error when Mitch singled to left.

After the Beavers plated two in the top of the sixth, the Rangers got those runs back in the seventh.  Reagle and Pettigrew started the inning with back-to-back singles before stealing second and third.  The next two batters, Felsenstein and Mitch, sent fly balls to center field that were deep enough to score the run, increasing Drew's cushion to 10-3.  Joshua Williams (Harrison, N.J.) worked around a two-out walk in the eighth, then handed the ball to Jendy Castillo (Newark, N.J.), who closed out the victory.

Six different Rangers had multi-hit games, with Felsenstein and Lipshitz tallying three hits apiece.  Lipshitz, who had his 20-game hitting streak to start the season snapped at NJCU on Wednesday, pushed his average back over .400 by going 3-for-5 with an RBI.  Felsenstein drove in two runs and scored Foanother, while Mitch finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs.  Lange and Reagle each recorded two hits and two runs scored.  Pettigrew, meanwhile, was 2-for-3 with three runs scored out of the nine spot.

Joe Dahut (Kensington, Md.) (2-0) started on the mound and earned the win.  He allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits and struck out seven in 5.2 innings.  Brian Pascale (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and Connor Henry (Budd Lake, N.J.) finished off the sixth before giving way to Williams, who tossed two scoreless innings.  He walked one and struck out two while not giving up a hit.  The only blemish on Castillo's ninth inning was a two-out single.

For CCNY, Cooper York ended up 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and he also pitched an inning.  Anthony Sautter was 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Sardar Khanbilvardi finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Josef Bystrik (1-2) took the loss after yielding eight runs (four earned) on 12 hits and two walks in five innings.  Edgar Rodriguez pitched two innings of relief and was charged with two runs on four hits and a walk.  Beaver pitching didn't strike out a Drew hitter in the game.

On Saturday, Drew (4-2 Landmark) resumes its Landmark Conference slate with a 12:30 p.m. doubleheader at Moravian (14-12, 7-5 Landmark).  The Rangers are currently in first place, while the Greyhounds are tied for second in the Landmark entering the three-game set.
