Rangers Split Twinbill at Moravian

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – On Saturday afternoon, the Drew University baseball team began a Landmark Conference series with a doubleheader at Moravian.  After dropping the opener by a 9-5 count, the Rangers (15-9, 5-3 Landmark) scored a run in the ninth to post a 5-4 victory over the Greyhounds (15-13, 8-6 Landmark) in game two of the twinbill at Gillespie Field.

Moravian built a 4-0 lead in game one, but Drew rallied to tie it with a four-spot in the top of the fifth.  Bryan Reagle (Easton, Pa.) roped a one-out double before scoring on Jayson Mitch's (Easton, Pa.) double.  Mitch eventually came across on a Ryan Sabbag (Miami, Fla.) sacrifice fly.  After Zach Lipshitz (Scotch Plains, N.J.) reached on an error, the Rangers tied the game on back-to-back RBI singles by Joseph Grossane (Merrick, N.Y.) and Matthew Lange (Glen Rock, N.J.).

However, the Greyhounds responded with five runs in their half of the inning.  Mike Mittl led off the inning with a double and scored on a single to right by Logan Welles.  After a sacrifice fly by Carmine Palummo, Ian Csencsitis walked to load the bases with two out.  Evan Kulig followed with a bases-clearing single that gave Moravian a 9-4 lead.  Drew picked up a run in the top of the seventh, but the Greyhounds got a ground ball to close out a 9-5 victory.

Drew was held to just six hits in the game, with Mitch going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.  Reagle, meanwhile, was 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI.  Paul Roth (Bethlehem, Pa.) got the start on the mound and lasted 3.2 innings.  He allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits and three walks.  Jendy Castillo (Newark, N.J.) walked one batter in 0.1 innings, while Davis Fouts (Coral Springs, Fla.) (1-3) took the loss after surrendering five runs (one earned) on five hits with a walk and a strikeout in 0.2 innings.  Zach Luke (Nazareth, Pa.) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, giving up a hit and striking out two.

Four different Greyhounds had multi-hit games, with Kulig finishing 2-for-3 with five RBIs.  Welles was 2-for-4 with a homer, two runs scored and two RBIs, while Chase Rogers ended up 2-for-2 with two runs scored.  Starting pitcher Rhett Jacoby went 4.2 innings, yielding four runs (one earned) on five hits while striking out two.  Nicholas Mazzella (5-3) earned the win after hurling 2.1 innings of one-run, one-hit relief.  He walked three and was credited with a strikeout.

The Greyhounds again jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game two, putting up three runs in the third and adding another in the fourth.  The Rangers countered with a three-spot of their own in the top of the fifth.  Lipshitz and Grossane singled before Brent Lincoln (Flemington, N.J.) walked to load the bases.  After Eric DiPietro (Devon, Pa.) was hit by a pitch to force in a run, Grossane came around on a wild pitch. Reagle then lifted a sacrifice fly to left that cut Drew's deficit to 4-3.

Grossane tied it with a sacrifice fly in the fifth, and he gave Drew the lead with an RBI double in the ninth.  Moravian put two runners on in the bottom half of the inning before Joshua Williams (Harrison, N.J.) closed out the 5-4 victory to secure the split.

Lipshitz went 4-for-5 with two runs scored in game two, while Grossane reached base four times on two hits and a pair of walks.   He drove in two runs and scored twice.  Starting pitcher Pete Violante (Easton, Pa.) allowed four runs (three earned) and 11 hits over 6.1 innings.  He struck out five and walked three.  Williams (3-1) earned the win after tossing 2.2 scoreless innings.  He gave up two hits and recorded a strikeout.

Kulig and Mittl each had three hits for the Greyhounds, who outhit the Rangers 13-9.  Andrew Koenig drove in a pair of runs, while Welles scored a run and knocked in another.  Kulig also started on the mound and lasted seven innings.  He yielded four runs and seven hits, struck out five and walked three.  Tyler Caraway (1-2) took the loss after surrendering one run on two hits with a strikeout and a walk in two innings.

Game three of the series is set for 12 p.m. on Sunday.  The winner will own the tiebreaker should the teams finish the season deadlocked.
