Cassella Scores Seven In Loss to Moravian

MADISON, N.J. – Despite a career-high seven goals from Lauren Cassella (Edison, N.J.), the Drew University women's lacrosse team (8-5, 2-2 Landmark) dropped a 20-17 decision to Moravian (9-3, 3-1 Landmark) at Ranger Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Moravian jumped out to a 6-2 lead before the Rangers closed within 10-8 at the 4:32 mark of the first half.  After the Greyhounds' Jillian Picciuto made it 11-8, back-to-back tallies by Allie DiDario (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) and Cassella cut Drew's deficit to one, 11-10, with 1:17 left before halftime.  However, Moravian found the back of the net twice in the final minute to take a 13-10 advantage into the break.

After Mia Campanale (Branchburg, N.J.) scored the first goal of the second half, the Greyhounds responded with seven of the next nine tallies to open up a 20-13 cushion with 14:43 left.  However, Cassella's seventh goal of the contest started a Drew comeback, as the Rangers would notch four straight scores to pull within 20-17 at the 4:38 mark.  Moravian won the ensuing draw, though, and was able to control possession for most of the remaining time, allowing the Greyhounds to close out a 20-17 victory.

Cassella picked up three ground balls and handed out an assist to go along with her seven goals.  DiDario added four goals and an assist.  She added six draw controls, four ground balls and three caused turnovers.  Mia Campanale (Branchburg, N.J.) registered three goals, and Charly Nolting (Craik, Sask.) finished with a goal and two assists.  Katiana Michalski (Eastchester, N.Y.) made 16 saves in net.

Liz Bill had eight goals and an assist for the Greyhounds.  Picciuto contributed four goals, while Olivia Clearie scored three times and controlled 13 draws.  Danielle Sullivan, meanwhile, tallied four points with a goal and three assists.  In addition to collecting a team-high five ground balls, goalkeeper Kelley Gavin (9-3) saved 10 Drew shots.

This was the Rangers' only home contest in a five-game stretch.  Drew visits Scranton (7-6, 3-1 Landmark) at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
