Drew Wraps Up Homestand Against Elizabethtown

Results: Men | Women

MADISON, N.J. –
The Drew University men's and women's tennis teams concluded a five-match homestand by welcoming Elizabethtown to the Drew Tennis Complex on Saturday.  Playing in picture-perfect conditions, the Ranger men (12-2, 2-1 Landmark) defeated the Blue Jays (2-9, 1-3 Landmark) by a 9-0 count.  In the women's match, Elizabethtown (6-3, 3-0 Landmark) earned a 5-4 victory over Drew (7-4, 1-2 Landmark).

On the men's side, the Rangers earned their seventh 9-0 win of the season, including their second straight.  Drew actually started with a 2-0 lead before play even began due to Elizabethtown's defaults at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.  The Rangers picked up another win when Bryce Kennedy's (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) opponent at No. 3 singles, Nick Strobel, was forced to retire.

Drew easily won the two remaining doubles matches.  With Geoffrey Diehl (West Hartford, Conn.) out injured, Vineet Vemulapally's (Boca Raton, Fla.) partner at No. 1 doubles was Bryce Weizer (Orwigsburg, Pa.).  The new pair had no problem with Ryan Caris and Tristan Boheim, notching an 8-0 victory.  At No. 2 doubles, Kennedy and Will Morrison (San Diego, Calif.) defeated Strobel and Alec Schneider by an 8-1 count.

Vemulapally beat Caris 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while Morrison earned a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Boheim in the No. 2 position.  Karel Raska (Morristown, N.J.) topped Michael Ryzuk by a score of 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles, and Lloyd Goldstein (New Providence, N.J.) completed the sweep with his 6-2, 6-1 No. 5 singles win over Schneider.

In the women's match, Drew took two of the three doubles contests.  Xylia Bruff (South Plainfield, N.J.) and Maria Navas Espinal (Valle, Colombia) earned an 8-4 win over Amber Burd and Sarah Donner in the No. 2 spot, while Cristina Riccio (New Providence, N.J.) and Christina Christodoulou (Branchburg, N.J.) won their No. 3 doubles match, 8-5, over Kaitlyn O'Connor and Ava Framm.  Elizabethtown was victorious at No. 1 doubles, however, as Leana Riehl and Meghan Chemidlin topped Kathryn Swenor (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and Ty Ty Witten (New Haven, Conn.) 8-4.

Witten and Swenor rebounded to win their singles matches.  Witten needed three sets before knocking off Chemidlin, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 2 position.  Swenor, meanwhile, earned a 6-1, 6-4 victory over O'Connor at No. 5 singles.

Elizabethtown, however, secured the victory by taking each of the four remaining singles matchups.  At No. 1 singles, Navas Espinal fell to Riehl by a 7-5, 6-3 count, while No. 3 Riccio dropped a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Burd.  At No. 4 singles, Donner defeated Christodoulou by a score of 6-3, 6-3.  Bruff and Framm played a tightly-contested No. singles match.  Framm eventually emerged victorious, 7-5, 7-6, with that match clinching the overall win for the Blue Jays.

After playing five straight at home, the Rangers hit the road for each of their next four matches.  This was the final home match of the season for the women's team.  Drew visits Scranton at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
