Lipshitz, Sabbag Homer In Loss to Scranton

MADISON, N.J. – Zach Lipshitz (Scotch Plains, N.J.) and Ryan Sabbag (Miami, Fla.) each hit a solo home run on Sunday afternoon, but it wasn't enough for the Drew University baseball team, as the Rangers (15-14, 4-7 Landmark) dropped a 14-3 decision to Scranton (14-13, 6-4 Landmark) at Doc Young Field.  With the victory, the Royals completed a sweep of the three-game weekend series.

Sabbag's blast to center field, his team-leading fourth of the year, gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.  However, Scranton scored two in the third and added another in the fourth to go in front 3-1.  Lipshitz went deep to left leading off the bottom half of the inning to cut Drew's deficit to 3-2, but the Royals responded with a four-spot in the fifth to make it 7-2.

Chase Standed belted a three-run homer for Scranton in the sixth, and the Royals scored three more in the seventh.  After Tommy Trotter hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth, Drew closed out the scoring with a run in the bottom of the ninth.  Brian Dagostino (Southbury, Conn.) and Tom Burr (Alexandria, Va.) both delivered pinch hit singles, while Paul Roth (Bethlehem, Pa.) was hit by a pitch, loading the bases with one out.  Bryan Reagle (Easton, Pa.) then ripped an RBI single through the left side to make it a 14-3 final.

This marked the sixth consecutive year in which the Drew-Scranton series ended in a sweep.  The Royals last swept the Rangers in 2015, while Drew won all three games in 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017.

Drew ended up with nine total hits on Sunday, with Anthony Tagliaferro (Monroe Township, N.J.) having a 2-for-3 day.  Joshua Williams (Harrison, N.J.) (3-2) got the start on the mound and took the loss.  He allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits, struck out three and walked three in four innings.  Jendy Castillo (Newark, N.J.) gave up four runs (two earned) and four hits in 1.1 innings, while Vinny Doren (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) followed and was charged with three runs on four hits in one inning.  After scoreless appearances by Harry Cohen (Fort Lee, N.J.) and Zach Luke (Nazareth, Pa.), Brandon Bottari (Shoreham, N.Y.) surrendered a run on three hits in the ninth.

Scranton finished with 20 hits in the contest, as Connor Harding ended up 4-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBIs.  Kevin Nolan was 3-for-5 with three runs scored, while Trotter went 2-for-5 and scored twice.  Standen finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBIs, and Brad Schneider added two hits, two runs and two RBIs.  Starting pitcher Pat Rohr (4-0) lasted eight innings.  He yielded two runs on six hits, struck out seven and walked two.  Matt McDonald pitched the ninth for the Royals, allowing a run on three hits and picking up a strikeout.

The Rangers are back in action on Tuesday, when they visit Kean (17-18) at 3:30 p.m. in a game that was added to the schedule to replace Wednesday's cancellation against FDU-Florham.  It will be Drew's second matchup with Kean this season.  The Rangers dropped a 2-1 decision to the Cougars in the season opener on Feb. 16.
