Drew Begins Road Trip With Loss at Kean

UNION, N.J. – On Tuesday afternoon, the Drew University baseball team (15-15) suffered an 8-5 loss to Kean (18-18) at Jim Hynes Stadium.  The contest marked the start of a five-game road trip for the Rangers.

This was Drew's second visit to Kean this season.  The Rangers began the campaign with a 2-1 loss to the Cougars on Feb. 16, and the weather conditions were vastly different than they were on Opening Day.

Drew's bats came out hot, as the Rangers scored a pair of runs in the top of the first.  Eric DiPietro (Devon, Pa.) drew a one-one walk, then Zach Lipshitz (Scotch Plains, N.J.) ripped an RBI double to left.  He moved to third on Joseph Grossane's (Merrick, N.Y.) single and scored on a base hit by Brent Lincoln (Flemington, N.J.).  After Kean put a run on the board in the bottom of the first, Lincoln increased the Rangers' advantage to 4-1 with a two-run single in the third.

However, the Cougars rallied for three unearned runs in the fourth to tie the game.  Kean then added two in the fifth to pull ahead, 6-4.  Isaiah Mateo (Hoboken, N.J.) scored an unearned tally to pull Drew within 6-5 in the top of the sixth, but the Cougars responded with a pair in their half of the inning to make it 8-5.  That would be the final score, as the Rangers suffered their sixth straight loss.

Lincoln finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs, while DiPietro and Lipshitz each scored twice.  Tim Jinks (Brick, N.J.) got the start on the mound and went two innings.  He allowed one run on one hit and walked two.  Jeff Serin (Hillsborough, N.J.) yielded three unearned runs on two hits while also picking up a strikeout in two innings of work. Brandon Radd (Edison, N.J.) (0-2) took the loss after surrendering two runs on two hits and a walk in 0.1 innings.  After Vinny Doren (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) tossed 1.2 innings, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits with a walk and a strikeout, Zach Luke (Nazareth, Pa.) pitched two scoreless, hitless innings.  He issued two walks.

For the Cougars, Matt Krupa went 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs, while Zach Joe finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.  Tim Huxen crossed the plate three times for Kean.  Starting pitcher Kyle Piekarz lasted two innings, allowing three runs on four hits with two walks and a strikeout.  Derek Walker (2-0) earned the win after pitching 3.1 innings.  He was charged with two runs (one earned) on two hits, struck out two and walked two.  Four Kean relievers followed Walker and combined to toss 3.2 shutout innings.  Kyle Gaeb picked up his second save after working a 1-2-3 ninth.

The Rangers were originally set to visit Staten Island (13-14) at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, but that contest has been cancelled due to the forecast of inclement weather.  Drew will now return to action on Thursday, when they travel to Salisbury (25-10) for a 3:30 p.m. matchup.
