MADISON, N.J. –
The Drew University baseball team conducted its Senior Day ceremonies prior to Saturday's doubleheader against Scranton at Doc Young Field.  The Rangers (15-13, 5-6 Landmark) were swept in the twinbill, however, as the Royals (13-13, 5-4 Landmark) earned a pair of 6-4 victories.

Drew scored three runs in the first inning of game one, as Eric DiPietro (Devon, Pa.) ripped a two-run double that was just fair down the left field line and Brent Lincoln (Flemington, N.J.) followed with an RBI single to right.  Scranton responded with a four-spot in the top of the second, though, and the Royals would hold that 4-3 advantage until the seventh.

With two out in the top of the seventh, the Royals' Kevin Haag dropped down a bunt with a runner on third.  Haag was called safe on the play, allowing the run to score.  After another base hit and a walk loaded the bases, Scranton increased its lead to 6-3 on a passed ball.

In the bottom of the seventh, Matthew Lange (Glen Rock, N.J.) drew a leadoff walk before Isaiah Mateo (Hoboken, N.J.) and Ryan Sabbag (Miami, Fla.) both singled to load the bases with nobody out.  Max Felsenstein (Glen Rock, N.J.) knocked in a run on a fielder's choice before Zach Lipshitz (Scotch Plains, N.J.) walked to load the bases again with two down.  Joseph Grossane (Merrick, N.Y.) was up next, and he launched a deep fly ball to left field that looked like it might be a walk-off grand slam.  It was caught on the warning track, however, giving Scranton the 6-4 win.

Felsenstein and Lipshitz each had a pair of hits in game one, while Felsenstein also drove in a run and scored another.  DiPietro, meanwhile, finished 1-for-2 with a run scored and two RBIs.  Starting pitcher Pete Violante (Easton, Pa.) (1-1) went 6.2 innings, allowing six runs (five earned) and nine hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.  Jendy Castillo (Newark, N.J.) got the final out and also walked a batter.

Haag ended up 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored for Scranton.  Chase Standen added two hits, while Justin Howell knocked in a pair of runs.  Brian Markowski (3-3) earned the win after giving up four runs on nine hits while striking out four and walking one over six innings.  Bryan Carmon came on in the seventh inning and registered the save.  He issued one walk.

Game two was scoreless for three innings until Scranton broke the deadlock with two in the top of the fourth.  Drew got a run back on Lange's RBI double in the bottom half of the inning, but the Royals increased their lead to 5-1 with a three-spot in the top of the fifth.  After single tallies in the fifth and seventh brought the Rangers within 5-3, Scranton picked up an insurance run on Brad Schneider's RBI single in the eighth.

Sabbag started the bottom of the ninth with a double to right center, and he eventually scored when Lipshitz reached on an error.  After a long fly ball by Grossane, DiPietro walked to load the bases with two down.  The Royals called upon Carmon, and he got Lincoln looking to end the game, giving Scranton its second 6-4 victory of the day.

As a team, the Rangers had 10 hits in game two, five of which were doubles.  Sabbag finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored, while Lange also ripped a pair of doubles and added an RBI.  Felsenstein, meanwhile, was 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI.  Paul Roth (Bethlehem, Pa.) (3-4) took the loss after allowing five runs on eight hits with three strikeouts and a walk.  Davis Fouts (Coral Springs, Fla.) gave up three hits in 1.1 innings of scoreless relief, while Jeff Serin (Hillsborough, N.J.) was charged with one run on five hits in two innings.  He also struck out two.  Tim Jinks (Brick, N.J.) recorded a pair of strikeouts in a 1-2-3 ninth.

For the Royals, Connor Harding and Brandon Peters each finished 3-for-4.  Peters added a pair of RBIs.  Patrick Mergel also drove in two runs for Scranton, while Haag scored twice.  Bobby Hegarty (2-3) worked into the ninth inning, yielding four runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts and two walks.  Anthony Caladie walked two in 0.2 innings, and Carmon struck out the only batter he faced to pick up his second save of the day and fifth of the season.

On Sunday, the Rangers and Royals will square off in the final game of the series at 12 p.m.
