Susquehanna Tops Drew In Four-OT Thriller

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – It took four overtimes to decide a winner in the Drew University men's lacrosse team's season finale at Susquehanna on Saturday afternoon.  However, after 73 minutes, Susquehanna's Colton Dick slipped one past Mike McGeeney (Annapolis, Md.) to give the River Hawks (11-6, 5-1 Landmark) an 8-7 victory over the Rangers (3-12, 0-6 Landmark) at Sassafrass Field.

Susquehanna won the faceoff to begin the fourth overtime and immediately took timeout.  The River Hawks then drew up a play for Dick, who put away the game-winner for his third goal of the contest.

The River Hawks built a 3-1 lead midway through the first quarter before Drew got goals from Kevin Goettlich (Florham Park, N.J.) and Devin Lyons (Hackettstown, N.J.) to even the score a 3-3 after one period.  Susquehanna held a 5-4 advantage at halftime, but Lyons and Jack Crowley (Madison, N.J.) each found the back of the net early in the third quarter to put the Rangers in front 6-5.

After Susquehanna tied it on Andrew Porzio's goal late in the period, Drew regained the lead on Ryan D'Alessandro's (Glen Ridge, N.J.) tally with 12:47 remaining.  However, Jack Gerrity scored for the River Hawks midway through the fourth quarter, and it would remain 7-7 for 17 minutes before the quadruple-overtime game-winner.

Seniors Crowley and Lyons tallied two goals apiece in their final collegiate game.  D'Alessandro had a goal and two assists, while Goettlich scored a goal and assisted on another.  Jonny Bronander (Glen Ridge, N.J.) corralled seven ground balls and caused two turnovers.  McGeeney (0-4), meanwhile, finished with 22 saves, as Susquehanna outshot Drew 43-22.

Dick picked up four ground balls to go along with his hat trick.  Andrew Porzio had five points on two goals and three assists, while Jack Donnelly recorded a goal and two assists.  Pierce Mead won 12 faceoffs and scooped up eight ground balls for the River Hawks, who held a 44-28 advantage in that category.  Goalkeeper Dylan Abplanalp (11-6) made six saves.

This was Drew's first overtime contest since an 11-10 win at Goucher on April 22, 2017, and the first time the Rangers played more than one extra period since a triple-overtime loss at Catholic on April 6, 2013.
