Drew Swept In Twinbill at Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – On Saturday afternoon, the Drew University baseball team travelled to Susquehanna for a Landmark Conference twinbill.  The Rangers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opener before the River Hawks rallied for a 7-4 victory.  Susquehanna (16-19, 8-6 Landmark) then completed the doubleheader sweep with a 6-1 win over Drew (15-18, 5-9 Landmark) in the nightcap at Bollinger Field.

After three scoreless innings, the Rangers put up a four-spot in the top of the fourth in game one.  Bryan Reagle (Easton, Pa.) led off the inning with a bunt single, then Joseph Grossane (Merrick, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch before Reagle scored on an error.  Another run came across when Isaiah Mateo (Hoboken, N.J.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded before Mike Pettigrew (Kearny, N.J.) drove in two with a single through the right side.

However, the River Hawks responded with five runs in the bottom half of the inning.  Steve Lorenz ripped a bases-loaded triple before back-to-back RBI singles by Anthony Dombrowksi and Justin Miller gave Susquehanna the lead.  Lorenz made it 6-4 with an RBI single in the fifth, and the River Hawks added another tally on Tom Giamio's base hit in the sixth.  Drew, meanwhile, was held hitless over the final three innings, as Susquehanna earned a 7-4 victory.

Pettigrew finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs, while Ryan Sabbag (Miami, Fla.) was 1-for-2 with a run scored.  Zach Luke (Nazareth, Pa.) got the start on the mound and went three innings.  He allowed three runs on two hits, walked one and struck out one.  Paul Roth (Bethlehem, Pa.) (3-5) took the loss after yielding two runs on three hits and a walk in one inning of work.  Joshua Williams (Harrison, N.J.) tossed the final two innings and gave up two runs on five hits with two walks and a strikeout.

Three different River Hawks had two hits in the contest, and Lorenz drove in four runs.  Nick Berger, meanwhile, went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.  Bobby Grigas (4-3) threw a complete game on the mound.  He surrendered four runs (two earned) on four hits, struck out seven and walked five.

In game two, Berger gave Susquehanna an early lead with an RBI single in the bottom of the first.  It would remain that way until the fifth, when the River Hawks increased their cushion to 2-0 on a two-out RBI double by Cole Luzins.

Drew cut its deficit to 2-1 on Reagle's RBI double in the seventh, but Susquehanna put up a four-spot in the bottom of the eighth to make it 6-1.  The Rangers put a pair of runners on in the ninth before Grossane flied to center to end the game and close out the River Hawks' 6-1 victory.

Reagle was the only Ranger with a multi-hit effort in game two.  He finished 2-for-5 with Drew's only RBI.  Max Felsenstein (Glen Rock, N.J.), meanwhile, had a double and scored the Rangers' run.  Pete Violante (Easton, Pa.) (1-2) took the loss after allowing four runs on nine hits in seven innings.  He struck out two and walked three.  Davis Fouts (Coral Springs, Fla.) pitched the eighth, surrendering two runs on three hits and a walk.

For the River Hawks, Justin Miller was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.  Berger and Peter Yarem each contributed two hits and a run, while Craig Roumes finished 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs.  Tyson Thrush (4-3) went seven innings on the mound and earned the win.  He gave up an unearned run on five hits, struck out seven and two walks.  Jack Kinney pitched a scoreless, hitless eighth before giving way to Will Carey, who yielded two hits and also recorded two strikeouts in the ninth.

As a result of Saturday's losses, Drew must win each of its four remaining conference games in order to have any shot at qualifying for the Landmark Tournament.  The first of these must-win contests will be the series finale with the River Hawks at 12 p.m. on Sunday.
