Rangers Take Series Finale at Susquehanna

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Needing a win to stay alive in the race for the Landmark Conference Tournament, that's exactly what the Drew University baseball team got on Sunday afternoon.  Jeff Serin (Hillsborough, N.J.) tossed a complete game, as the Rangers (16-18, 6-9 Landmark) snapped a nine-game losing streak with a 5-4 victory over Susquehanna (16-20, 8-7 Landmark) at Bollinger Field.

Despite the victory, however, Drew was eliminated from postseason contention with Scranton's doubleheader sweep over Moravian and Elizabethtown's win at Juniata on Sunday.

Susquehanna scored twice in the bottom of the second before the Rangers countered with a run of their own in the third when Ryan Sabbag (Miami, Fla.) came across on a wild pitch.  Drew then tied it on Max Felsenstein's (Glen Rock, N.J.) RBI single in the fifth.

In the top of the sixth, the Rangers took the lead with a pair of runs.  After three walks loaded the bases with one out, Sabbag lifted a sacrifice fly to center field.  Mike Pettigrew (Kearny, N.J.) followed with an RBI single that made it 4-2.  Susquehanna pulled within 4-3 in the bottom of half of the inning, but Drew immediately got that run back when Paul Roth (Bethlehem, Pa.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the seventh.

The River Hawks trimmed the Rangers' advantage to 5-4 on a Cole Luzins double in the eighth, but Serin got out of the inning with a line drive to second.  In the bottom of the ninth, Susquehanna put the winning run on second with two out after a walk and a double.  Serin induced a Peter Yarem popup, though, to end the game and cap off the 5-4 victory.

Serin (3-1) gave up four runs (three earned) on 12 hits, struck out four and walked four.    Offensively, Felsenstein and Pettigrew led the way with two hits apiece.  They each picked up an RBI, as well.  Sabbag, meanwhile, was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

Four different players had multi-hit games for Susquehanna, with Anthony Dombrowski and Justin Miller each notching two hits, a run scored and an RBI.  Craig Roumes, meanwhile, finished 2-for-5 with a run scored.  Ryan Beckwith got the start on the mound and lasted five innings.  He allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits with six strikeouts and four walks.  Brendan Damiano (2-2) took the loss after surrendering two runs on one hit and three walks while also recording a strikeout in 0.2 innings of work.  Andrew Russell was charged with one unearned run on three hits while striking out one and walking one over 1.2 innings.  Will Carey retired all five batters he faced, including a strikeout.

This was Drew's final road contest of the year.  The Rangers begin their season-ending five-game homestand by welcoming Swarthmore (28-9) to Doc Young Field for a 3:30 p.m. matchup on Tuesday.
