MADISON, N.J. –
After having five straight home contests, including an entire conference series, postponed or cancelled due to weather, the Drew University baseball team finally returned to Doc Young Field for the first time in nearly six weeks on Saturday afternoon.  And the Rangers (12-5, 3-1 Landmark) made sure their homecoming was a successful, knocking off Juniata (4-16, 1-6 Landmark) by an 11-5 count in the opening game of Landmark Conference series.

Zach Lipshitz (Scotch Plains, N.J.), Max Felsenstein (Glen Rock, N.J.) and Ryan Sabbag (Miami, Fla.), the 1-2-3 hitters in the Drew lineup, combined for eight hits, eight RBIs and six runs scored in the win.  Sabbag went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBIs, including a three-run homer.  Felsenstein finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBIs, and Lipshitz was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Lipshitz and Sabbag were responsible for putting the Rangers on the board in the third, when Lipshitz led off the inning with a single, moved to second on an error, and scored on Sabbag's single up the middle.  Drew then put up a five-spot in the fourth with the trio at the top of the order knocking in all five runs.  After singles by Brent Lincoln (Flemington, N.J.), Eric DiPietro (Devon, Pa.) and Mike Pettigrew (Kearny, N.J.) loaded the bases, Lipshitz lifted a sacrifice fly to center that made it 2-0.  Felsenstein followed with an RBI single that drove in another run before Sabbag capped the rally with a long three-run homer to left.

Juniata put up a three-spot in the top of the sixth to cut into the Rangers' lead, but Drew immediately countered with three runs of its own in the bottom half of the inning.  Lipshitz doubled to start the inning before scoring on an error caused by Felsenstein's infield single.  Felsenstein took second on the error and moved to third on a wild pitch, then stole home on the back end of a double steal with Sabbag.  Sabbag later scored when on a perfectly executed squeeze play by Isaiah Mateo (Hoboken, N.J.), who was credited with a bunt single.

The Eagles rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh to pull within 9-5, only to have the Rangers again respond.  DiPietro led off the inning with a single to center before Pettigrew ripped a double down the left field line.  Felsenstein then drove in both runners with a single to center, making it 11-5 Drew.

As a team, the Rangers collected 17 hits, with DiPietro and Pettigrew each ending up 2-for-4 with two runs scored.  Lincoln and Mateo added two hits apiece.

Paul Roth (Bethlehem, Pa.) (3-3) earned the win after allowing three runs on eight hits over six innings.  He also struck out four.  Davis Fouts (Coral Springs, Fla.) yielded two runs on four hits with two walks and a strikeout over 1.1 innings, while Vinny Doren (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) needed just 10 pitches to get five outs.  He issued a walk, as well.

For Juniata, Isaac Maclay went 4-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs.  Adam Kipp was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Devyn Carper and Austin Suders registered two hits apiece.  Overall, the Eagles had 12 hits in the contest.

Starting pitcher Mark Cyterski (0-6) took the loss after allowing six runs (five earned) on 10 hits with two strikeouts and two walks over four innings.  Josiah Lynn tossed two innings of relief, giving up three runs on three hits while striking out one and walking one.  Nevin Wood surrendered two runs on three hits, and Julius Thomas surrendered one hit in a scoreless eighth.

On Sunday, the Rangers and Eagles will conclude the series with a doubleheader that gets underway at 12 p.m.
