Lipshitz, Sabbag Each Notch 100th Hit In Doubleheader Split

MADISON, N.J. – Zach Lipshitz (Scotch Plains, N.J.) and Ryan Sabbag (Miami, Fla.) both recorded their 100th career hit on Sunday afternoon, as the Drew University baseball team (13-6, 4-2 Landmark) split a Landmark Conference doubleheader with Juniata (5-17, 2-7 Landmark) at Doc Young Field.  After the Eagles scored five in the seventh to take game one, 10-8, the Rangers' offense erupted for 22 runs and 18 hits in the nightcap, a 22-8 victory.

Juniata followed up its five-run seventh in game one by scoring three in the first inning of game two.  The Rangers got one back on Joseph Grossane's (Merrick, N.Y.) sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first, then Lipshitz and Sabbag each recorded a two-run double in the second to give Drew a 5-1 lead.

The Rangers added six more in the third and another in the fifth before the Eagles put up a five-spot in the top of the sixth to pull within 12-7.  However, Drew responded with eight runs in the bottom half of the inning to open up a 20-7 advantage.  The Rangers sent 14 batters to the plate, as Matthew Lange (Glen Rock, N.J.) recorded both a leadoff single and an RBI double in the inning.  Drew then picked up two more in the eighth before Juniata recorded an unearned tally in the ninth to make the final score 22-8.  The 22 runs represented Drew's most in a game since a 24-1 win over NYU-Poly Tech on March 3, 2013.

Every Drew starter either scored or drove in at least one run (or both) in game two.  Sabbag finished a home run short of the cycle, going 4-for-4 with six RBIs and two runs scored.  Lipshitz, meanwhile, was 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBIs.  Grossane ended up 2-for-4 with four RBIs, and Mike Pettigrew (Kearny, N.J.) scored three times and collected three RBIs as part of a 2-for-4 day.  Lange also had three hits, and Eric DiPietro (Devon, Pa.) crossed the plate three times.  Despite going 0-for-4, Max Felsenstein (Glen Rock, N.J.) tallied four runs in the contest.

Starting pitcher Jeff Serin (Hillsborough, N.J.) (2-0) was the main recipient of all that offense.  He went 5.1 innings, yielding seven runs (six earned) on eight hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.  Joshua Williams (Harrison, N.J.) tossed 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, giving up two hit and a walk while striking out four.  Brandon Bottari (Shoreham, N.Y.) and Joe Dahut (Kensington, Md.) each pitched an inning of relief, with Dahut allowing an unearned run.

For the Eagles, Adam Kipp finished 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored, and two RBIs.  Cameron Livingston and Ryan McClain, meanwhile, each went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.  Gavin Grimaldi (1-3) took the loss after giving up 10 runs (four earned), six hits and two walks over two-plus innings.  Nevin Wood was charged with eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits in 3.1 innings of work, while Josiah Lynn allowed two runs and four hits in 0.2 innings.  Jesse Beeler also gave up two runs.

In game one, Drew scored six runs in the bottom of the first after Juniata had taken a 1-0 lead.  Lipshitz got it started with a single before stealing second and third.  The throw to third went into left field for an error, allowing Lipshitz to come across with the tying run.  After Sabbag doubled, Grossane ripped an RBI double to the gap in left center that put the Rangers in front.  Isaiah Mateo (Hoboken, N.J.) drove in a run with a single to right, then DiPietro smacked a two-run double that was just fair down the left field line.  Pettigrew capped the rally with a base hit to right center that knocked in DiPietro.

An Anthony Tagliaferro (Monroe Township, N.J.) sacrifice fly in the fourth made it 7-1 before Juniata put up a four-spot in the top of the fifth to pull within 7-5.  The Rangers responded in the bottom half of the inning, though, getting an RBI single from Pettigrew to push their advantage to 8-5.

However, the Eagles rallied for five runs in the seventh.  After a walk, a hit batsman and a single loaded the bases with nobody out, Austin Suders roped a two-run single to left center that trimmed Drew's cushion to 8-7.  Ryan McClain tied it with a base hit through the left side before Devyn Carper's fly ball down the right field line landed fair for the go-ahead two-run single.  The Rangers then went down in order in the bottom of the seventh, as Juniata earned the come-from-behind 10-8 victory.

Drew had 12 hits in game one, with Grossane going 3-for-4 with an RBI.  Sabbag went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while DiPietro and Pettigrew both finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs.  DiPietro also scored a run.  Starting pitcher Pete Violante (Easton, Pa.) took a no-decision after allowing five runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts and two walks over five innings.  Brandon Radd (Edison, N.J.) surrendered two runs, a hit and a walk in one inning of work, while Vinny Doren (Berkley Heights, N.J.) (2-1) suffered the loss after giving up three runs on four hits in 0.1 innings.  He was also credited with a strikeout.  Davis Fouts (Coral Springs, Fla.) finished up on the mound, yielding one hit over 0.2 innings.

Suders finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs to lead the Eagles.  Carper was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs, while Chris Schreder ended up 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs.  Kipp started on the mound and lasted 4.1 innings.  He yielded eight runs (seven earned) on 11 hits, walked one and struck out one.  J.D. Weyant (1-0) was credited with the win after holding the Rangers to one hit over two scoreless innings.  He struck out two and walked one.  Beeler, meanwhile, retired both batters he faced to earn his second save of the season.

This marked the beginning of a busy week for the Rangers, who play nine games in nine days from April 7-15.  Drew continues the stretch by visiting Rutgers-Newark (2-1) at 3:30 p.m. on Monday.
