Drew Falls at Rutgers-Newark In Non-Conference Action

NEWARK, N.J. – The Drew University baseball team played its fourth game in three days on Monday afternoon.  The Rangers (13-7) took on Rutgers-Newark (8-15) at Riverfront Stadium and suffered a 9-6 loss.

Drew got on the board first when Mike Pettigrew (Kearny, N.J.) singled home Bryan Reagle (Easton, Pa.), who had doubled leading off the second.  Rutgers-Newark took the lead with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, then put up a five-spot in the third to open up a 7-1 advantage.

Joseph Grossane (Merrick, N.Y.) drew a bases loaded walk in the top of the fourth, then the Rangers cut their deficit to 7-4 with a pair of runs in the sixth.  Ryan Sabbag (Miami, Fla.) walked with the bases loaded to force in a run before Matthew Lange's (Glen Rock, N.J.) groundout knocked in another.

However, the Scarlet Raiders countered with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning.  Drew scored twice in the seventh to get within 9-6 and brought the tying run to the plate with two down in the ninth.  Luis Rojas struck out Max Felsenstein (Glen Rock, N.J.), though, and Rutgers-Newark came away with the victory.

Zach Lipshitz (Scotch Plains, N.J.) went 5-for-6 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI.  Felsenstein finished 2-for-6, and Eric DiPietro (Devon, Pa.) scored a pair of runs.  Jendy Castillo (Newark, N.J.) (0-1) got the start on the mound and took the loss.  He allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits, struck out two and walked one in two innings.  Joe Dahut (Kensington, Md.) pitched an inning, giving up a run and two hits.  Zach Luke (Nazareth, Pa.) recorded a walk and a strikeout in 1.2 innings of hitless relief, while Tim Jinks (Brick, N.J.) was charged with two runs and five hits over 1.1 innings.  He also picked up a strikeout.  Joshua Williams (Harrison, N.J.) finished up, surrendering just a walk over the final two innings.

Six different Scarlet Raiders had two hits in the game, with Dominic Magliaro going 2-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBIs.  Kevin Tamsula was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, while Adam Tricarico reached base four times on two hits and two walks.  He also scored twice.  Casey Hanley (2-0) earned the win after yielding two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and three walks over five innings.  Greg Sampson tossed two innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on three hits and a walk.  He also recorded a strikeout.  After Timothy Kales held the Rangers to two hits in 1.2 shutout innings, Rojas nailed down the save with the game-ending strikeout.

After an off day on Tuesday, the Rangers return to action with a 3:30 p.m. tilt at NJCU (12-7) on Wednesday.  The contest is the make-up of a game that was postponed on March 22.
